I want to buy an outboard from another guy (he in Florida, me in Pennsylvania), but because of the weight, it can't be shipped via UPS, Fedex, or DHL. I hade the idea of shipping the upper and lower halves seperate, but I don't know if the upper half would still be too heavy. It's a 1999 50 hp Johnson, 195 lbs total weight. The limit is 150 lbs. I figure the lower unit only weighs about 20 lbs, so that would leave about 175 lbs which is too much. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: shipping an outboard

www.forwardair.com and "check prices" on container shipping. type in that the weight is 250 ( with pallet and such) and its going class 85 and the size is 48 x 48 x 24 . disconnect the lowerunit and place both on a pallet. i am sending a merc 115 inline 6 to utah from florida tomorrow shipped the exact same way for 310.00 in 4 days, and also click on "SHIPPER" next to SHIPPER TYPE.

or just click here web page

Re: shipping an outboard

Thanks for the info. It's pretty sad that I have to get a whole outboard for the parts I want. The price for the individual parts(lower unit and electric tilt) are rediculous anywhere I look. I see if you use one of their containers, it's only $28 more, but you have to wait 2 weeks due to demand. Only have to supply the lock and straps. That is not a bad option. Thanks again.
