Is there an "average" cost to replace the transom at a boat yard? I did a search and didn't really see anything as far as boat yard pricing. I got a quote of $900 to replace the transom in a 20' Kenner Bay Boat. Is this around the typical price for the amount of work involved? Thanks, T

Re: Shop Cost to Replace Transom?

Short answer is no... Time and materials and how much really has to be done. Yard one will use 3/4 CDX for the core at $30/sheet with polyester resin, yard two will use 3/4 Okume at $100/sheet and epoxy. The bigger question is how much is your time worth and how long do you have to get it done? A yard can put gang on it and be done in about three days depending on the degree of repair. In Monday and your skiing Saturday... Can you do that and work, do chores and keep the Big Boss happy?
What is the labor cost per/hr at the yard and what stuff will they put back in?

Re: Shop Cost to Replace Transom?

$900 sounds cheap, but then it depends on what kind of a job they do. As Sport says, there are a lot of variables like outboard or i/o, whether they have to take the deck cap off for accessability, etc. Another huge variable is how many other problems they discover in the process, such as rotten deck or stringers. I doubt you got a solid 'quote' you can take to the bank, but more like a 'guesstimate'. The integrity of the yard comes into play. A cheap estimate can get your boat there and tore apart, once other problems are 'found' it's highly unlikely you will move the boat and you might end up with a much bigger bill with no choice but to pay it. Get more estimates and get references from other costumers. Sam

At $900.00 I would wonder about the quality of the job. That would be way low here in Miami.

For $900 the guy will either be going out of business soon or is a hack. Get a second quote in my opinion.

Uphere in the Northeast a quality transom job goes for at least $3000.

I would say $900 is fine, for $3000 you can buy a very nice second hand boat ....

Re: Shop Cost to Replace Transom?

Thanks for all of the input. I did a little research and the guy that will do the work built boats with his brother in South Texas. He also worked at Boston Whaler for awhile. I inspected a boat that he replaced the transom in and it looked pretty stout. No cracking of any kind and the gel-coat work looked professional. The boat had a Yamaha 200 hanging from it and the owner said that it had been run pretty hard since the install. I'll find out what materials he uses. So far sounds like an OK deal. Thanks again for the comments

I would say $900 is about right. It can be replaced from the outside or the inside, I did mine in about 25 hrs from the outside, I have done this before though and have many hours of fiberglass work experience...

The pictures don't show up, I had better learn how to include pics...
