If they are "Good" Certified Marine Mechanics, they should have a certificate, and gone to school for about 2 years. I don't like paying high rates, but that's the way it goes. My marina charges $100.00 to winterize an OB,and on the bill it states $20.00 for gear oil(that should buy 1 gal.+,the job takes about 1 hour.
the split for the mech, is 60/40, just the same for auto mechs.

About $75.00 tp $90.00 here.

Everyone has to remember something. That $75.00 to $90.00 covers alot of costs.

1. Building, inc. mortgages, taxes.
2. Support personnel.
3. Tools.
4. Training.
5. Heating/cooling.
6. Insurance-a BIG one.
7. Inventory costs.
8. Payroll taxes.
9. Social Security.

Just to mention the big ones.

Many people think these labor rates are obscene. All of that money DOES NOT go into the technicians pocket.

How amny people ask a doctor, a dentist what he/she makes?

Boating is not cheap. It is a sport enjoyed by relatively few people and has relatively few service providers. A good shop charging $90.00 per hour is a bargain. You get what you pay for as we've all seen time and time again on this board.

You made some very good points there djohn19. The technicians probably get scamed on the deal. Any technicians out there that can tell us what their take would be? I'd be willing to bet that the mechanic probably only see's about $30 bucks an hour.

Free,at "Back Yard Repair". Found that you can do most things your self with a shop manual and a little time. I have done 2 ground up restores. Larson 17' (Lost by hitting a something at 40 mph, still dont know what it was) and a Allmand 19' Super Nova. Nothing is sweeter knowing you did it yourself. Also it gives you a better understanding of how thing work just in case there is no "mech on duty" at sea.

Re: shop labor rates

Well I guess that settles it, from the above entries, the average = $77.50 / hr.
I guess we can't complain.
Or DIY!
So $100.00 for winterize, is OK except for the extreme cost of lower unit oil.

$100.00 is $99.50 too much money to winterize when you live in Texas.
