Re: shop labor rates

Labor rates are very similar.
Question should be: How many hours for any specific job? Where can we find a table where to check the normal labor time required for different jobs?

Re: shop labor rates

Well before I pay I try to factor in what it will cost me to do it, not just the parts but my time also.
Then say if it is something that cost 70 per hour and they can do it in an hour where it will take me in the yard 3 or more it may be worth the labor cost.
Does it take special tools I don't have?
Hey these guys work on them every day and should get paid for their knowledge.
The people I deal with are great about when I want something done saying "you don't want to pay us to do that is easy to do just. this or that...."

I have found parts cheaper than they have but I still get the parts there because of this.
Most mechanics are this way really. Look at the number up here giving free advice

As far a cost tables I know on auto repair there are some. I will look at a book tonight and see who makes them they may make the ones for boats to.
Funny thing about these table it they would give about 4x too long for a brake job and only about 1/10 the time needed to R&R a trans

If you're talking about working on outboards I'd agree that the time spent to do a given job is probably fairly constant across the board. The dynamic changes big time when you talk about inboard powered boats. My 24' Chris*Craft, with a single engine and 4' x 8' access hatch, was a piece of cake for virtually anything that had to be done. My Four Winns is set up a lot differently- the engine room is pretty packed and access isn't nearly as good. If I had a genny it would be even worse.

BTW, labor rates on Long Island run in the neighborhood of $100/hr. I also pay $60/ft for summer dock space and a couple grand for winter storage and annual maintenance.

It hurts, but I can't really begrudge them the money. We lose about one marina a year around here- the owners give up and sell out to real estate developers. That's prime waterfront property they're sitting on, and it's hard to blame them for letting go of a business that takes a helluva lot of work and aggravation. The owners and mechanics go 'b*lls to the wall' twice a year- getting the boats out and winterized; then getting them serviced, summerized and launched. I wouldn't want to do it

Re: shop labor rates

Way back in the 70's after I got out of the Air Force and went to work at a local marina they had a sign on the wall for shop rates that was something like this.

Labor Rate, $20.00 per hour
If you want to watch, $22.00 per hour
If you want to help, $25.00 per hour.
If you tried to fix it first, $30.00 per hour.
