Re: shop manuals

Yes, you need 2 manuals. Is your drive an Alpha I or an Alpha I Gen II?
Different manuals.

Re: shop manuals

The easiest way to tell is by looking at it. If it has 4 thru bolts with nuts holding the upper and lower together, it's a Gen II drive.
The Gen II drives also started in 91 and go to present time, from 90 and earlier were the straight Alpha I drives.

Re: shop manuals

i just won me a bid on ebay for a mercrusier service manual. gonna send em off my bread and see if i get anything in return...if i do get the service manual i won the bid on, i'd recommend ebay as a place ya might get yer service manual at....i assume i'll get what i ordered. this will be the third service manual i've got off ebay.....
does anyone know if C-90-71707 is a 2 vol. set also? i only bid on the one book it looked like to me......it says mercruiser stern drive units and marine engines on the cover. so i got the impression this book is only one vol..........

Re: shop manuals

bobboater, I cannot tell you what manual you need if you don't state what you have, year, model, serial number, something. There are (at present) 42 service manuals, not counting the 5 Smartcraft manuals. You have to help by saying what you have, not what manuals you have, you may have the wrong thing.
Ziggy, I don't know if the old manuals came as volume 1 and 2 or not. They were usually in binders (the old original ones) not sure how the print them now.

That is the WRONG manual Bob. It'f for the 93 to 97 engines.
Assuming you engine is actually an 89 (Just because your boat is an 89, doens't mean the engine is) you need manual #15 for your engine, now if you actually have an 88, which is very possible, then you need manual #9.
Now you see why you need to use Engine serial numbers when looking for manuals, and parts and specs for Merc products.
One thing for sure, for your drive you need manual #6 which is online and free.
Here is the link to it.

There are some things similar, but do you know which ones are simialar and which ones aren't?

The link to the outdrive is there, just move your cursor and find the links to the different sections on the index page. Then download and save the sections you want to your computer.

Re: shop manuals

You don't have to buy it from the dealer, you just have to know which one to buy.
What is the Mercruise Serial Number on your engine, with that I can tell you which manual you need. I am a Mercruiser tech.
Even if you are stuck with that manual, don't try to use it for your engine, it won't help. You don't know what is usable information and what isn't.
Either save it in case you buy a newer boat, or sell it on ebay again.
