Chillaxing right now with the AC running (heating - season just starting LOL). I'm beginning to think my shore power post struggles in wet weather...working great now!

Well if you did not find an actual problem dont get too comfortable !!!

I'd bet on it being one of two possible problems... the source of power is coming through a wire too small for the job OR the lugs on the plug are loose causing major resistance. A third possibility is the receptacle at shore is not making good contact with your plug end. Those little clamps inside receptacles sometimes loosen and some times will corrode causing the same resistive problem resulting in a low voltage.

Update:

The line coming off the shore power is reading a 103V under a 10 amp load. Beginning to worry that this is a bigger problem as my slip neighbor just mentioned to me a problem he is having with his HVAC - drops out like mine does - do to low voltage? I'm contacting the power company tomorrow.

Re: Shore Power Voltage Drop

Voltage drop accumulates all along the path from the utility's transformer up to the point of utilization, proportional to resistance in the circuit. It includes the marina's service equipment and distribution system, your extension cord and your boat's circuitry. It only becomes evident as more current is used.

The variations in voltage that you're seeing may be coincident with changes to the load on the system caused by other boaters. I expect that the available voltage will be at its lowest when the marina is well occupied and perhaps on a hot day when a number of air conditioners are running. If that is the case, the voltage will read low even before you add your 10 amp load. If the addition of your 10 amps causes the voltage to drop dramatically from normal levels, then the problem is likely local to your boat. It could be that the marina's wire size to your slip is too small or too long or both. To ensure that your equipment doesn't contribute the last straw that increases the accumulated voltage drop to an unacceptable point, I suggest you use the shortest extension cord possible with the largest gauge of wire that you can afford to buy.

As mentioned by others, loose connections can cause this problem too, but unless there's an obvious hot spot, my bet would be that the wire size in the distribution system is inadequate. - Grandad

I ran into a problem like that one time with about the same kind of voltage reading... had a bad connection on neutral line coming into the service from the pole.

Re: Shore Power Voltage Drop

My power company came out today and determined that their "neutral was splitting under load" - whatever that means. Power company will be back tomorrow to dig up the line - from the pole to my boat? Doesnt make sense that my boat is the only boat being feed from this power line.

Well, sounds like they know what it means if they're digging stuff up. Congrats on getting some action. Hope it solves your problem.

Re: Shore Power Voltage Drop

The neutral problem starts at my boat but does effect boats after me. They tapped a neutral off the power post below me until they can correct. My neighbor's AC problem should go away. Thanks to all that helped!
