Short hub or long hub?

1986 aq131a with 275 out drive.I am looking to replace the prop but how do you tell if it is a short hub or a long hub? Mine has the cone with the plastic washer and a allen bolt holding it on. Thanks.

Remove the fishing line cutter and measure the length of the prop shaft the is exposed. If it is 4 - 5/8", it's the short hub version.

Prop shaft length is the same for the long and short hub props. The short hub props require a spacer.

I think a short hub shaft cannot use a long hub prop, but a long hub shaft will use a long hub propeller but can also be fitted with a short hub prop sing the proper hardware?

I have the same setup that MNfuncpl has. When you place a long hub prop on the shaft with the line cutter that is for the short hub, only about three threads of the shaft are exposed. So how are you going to attach the washer and cone to that to hold the prop on?

It is not immediately evident when you look at a Volvo drive, but there are 2 different propeller shaft lengths in common use and this affects which propellers will fit. Volvo refers to these as "long hub" and "short hub" propellers. Even if you are replacing the propeller with an OEM Volvo prop, you must know which you require or the propeller you order may not fit.

Long-shaft = 4-11/16"
Short-shaft = 5-3/8"
