I first tried to post this on the 'engines' thread but apparently I didn't have permission...just wondering what the different applications are for long and short shaft engines.
I would assume that short shaft engines may be for more shallow water applications...and long shafts probably perform better...??? And how would I tell wich of my engines may be short or long shaft? Thanks.

Your transom height determines the length of the shaft of your motor, not water depth.

A deep V boat may have a long shaft motor while a jon boat will have a short shaft.

To go along with the previous post, they perform equally well, if they are set up correctly. The incorrect shaft length for a particular boat will perform badly, not because of motor design itself, just where the prop is in relation to the hull.

Long shaft engines placed on short transoms will produce water splashes at back transom along with more tail drag against wate flow losing some top end speed, short shaft engines placed on long transoms will produce prop aireation on choppy waters or at tight turns at speed. Portable up tp 50 HP long shaft engines generally comes standard delivered with at least 1" pitch difference than short shaft engines.

Thanks, that clears up a few things, at present my engines are 50hp and less. But I may be looking for a larger than 50hp for my 16' Gruman Skidaddle, in the future...Thanks again.
