There does not appear to be any add-ons or extensions to the original shaft. Must be a short shaft. The motor looks super clean, in and out. Looks like very little use or abuse. Only one spot with corrosion and the rest looks like 'new' (for a 60's motor).
I've been Googling the serial number and there is very little info on it. Some sites don't go that far back and another doesn't have this specific motor listed. It does look like a 1967 short shaft Fastwin.
Tonight was the first time I could place it into the large bucket of water and pull the cord. Choke pulled out, squeeze the ball ... Took several pulls, but it finally turned. Several more pulls and it finally started, sputtered and then died. Turned the throttle up to 50% of full, pulled several more times and it started again. It wants lots of choke. Push in the choke and it wants to sputter out. It like lots of throttle. Turn throttle down and it wants to sputter out. Then it died.
Tried to start again and it wouldn't. My arm hurts.
If it isn't obvious yet, this old small motor is all new to me and I've lots to learn.
#1: What is that small dial to the right? It's labled 'low speed mixture L R' Should I turn this clockwise or counter-clockwise with the strating problems?
#2: Previously, I wasn't interested in connecting a battery with the auto start. Where can I find the proper connector for the starter? Again, the manual has not been easy to find and I have no way to source parts. Can I go battery direct without the specific starting wires?
Does anyone start an 18 hp motor with the pull cord? My arm still hurts.
thx
