I need to be able to tell if the shaft I have in my Johnson is long or short.
The model is 60DE10BL. The motor cover says Gale/Sovereign and it is a 60hp.
Can't wait for responces.

Watch it what you call us and you might get better help. But I'll answer your question anyway. It is not a Johnson, it is a Gale. Yes, they are both made by OMC and virtually identical once you remove the hood.

The model # says it is a long shaft, but it has had nearly 50 years to be changed back and forth. If it has a 5 inch spacer between the lower unit and mid section, it is a long shaft. No spacer, it is a short. Just take a look.

the only way to know for sure is the measure the motor.

Correct. With the outboard upright, measure from the inside top of the transom clamp to the bottom of the skeg and note the measure at the anti-ventilation plate...the flat plate above the gearcase and prop. Now throw a straight edge on the bottom of the your boat at the transom, so it extends out from the transom about a foot. Have someone measure from the top of the transom board/edge to the straight edge. Note the measure. If your transom is deeper than 20 inches you need a long shaft outboard, unless you intend to use an offset jack plate. Shorter than 20 inches and you're good to go with a short shaft. The anti-ventilation plate should be within 1.5 inches, up or down, give or take, of the bottom of the boat when the outboard is installed.

Like I said, if it has the 5 inch extension #93, the motor is a long shaft. All it take is a glance to tell.

The motor in the picture is a short shaft--no extension

See the 5 inch spacer that is a slightly diferent color? That is the difference from a short shaft 15 inches to a long shaft 20 inches.
