As I recall, I in fact started a thread against raising the minimum wage to prevent just this from happening, and I was scalded by the libs on the board.

I quit hiring high school kids to do small odd jobs around my Oregon business when the state raised it's minimum wage over 6$. I either did the jobs myself or they went undone.

...and they ring their hands and moan at the low employment of youth. How can so many well educated people be so dumb? They really aren't. They just want votes more than they care about the people they so profess to embrace.

If the demand is there they will have to hire enough people to do the work....

Haut, obviously you don't know how a business works. Alot of the work teens do isn't necessary, high resposibility postions. Teens don't typically work those. They work the low stuff, which alot of times doesn't have to be done. I know that's how it is where I work. My boss just will leave the work not done.

And if you do have to hire them at the higher rates, the cost is passed onto us, the consumer. So it's a lose-lose situation.

Ideal for liberal votes.

That must be why I have owned my own business for 15 years......
Though I must admit that even at entry level, the jobs I provide pay more than minimum wage......
I do not think that minimum wage should necessarily be a 'living wage'.....
That's why God made 'overtime'....
It would be nice, but I don't think it is a reality.....JK

I agree with Haut.....its not necessarily easy to say that, but if the business can afford to lose that work then sobeit. If the teenager in question is good and responsible, he wil keep his job, the company will keep him/her around somehow. That is a FACT. I see it every year. Even when hours are cut etc, you still can work around that and keep solid workers around. I can pretty much garauntee that the kids getting laid off are the ones who are late to work and goof off all the time. They didnt deserve the job in the first place.

This new min wage really just acts as a method of getting kids to be better more responsible people. IF they are arent they get fired. Plain and simple.

I have remained somewhat quiet on this matter. I don't believe that it is the governments job to dictate what wages should be. It should be a function of the free market system. With that said, the government flat out refusing to secure our boarders, enforce the living standards of homes, and the ease in which one can get phoney documentation is causing a downward spiral for the "real" Americans who are trying to make ends meet.

This has had an adverse effect on the free market system. Sure when you have 20 people living in one home in violation of zoning codes, and many of them are working for cash under the table, the balance within the free market system gets thrown off.

I am not sure what the answer is, but I am not adverse to changing what is already a socialistic function of our economy to reflect current trends.

Simply put.....
If it has to be done, it will be...
If I have to take trash to the dumpster, it will be done & either I will have to do it myself or pay someone to do it.....
Or risk having the health department shut me down...
Just one example.....
Call it the law of demand & supply....
The garbage demands to go out.....
Someone will have to supply the means......

That is the point. Maybe a business owner doesn't want to take trash to the dumpster, it's likely a waste of his time. Perhaps he also cannot afford to pay more than it's worth for someone to do it. The point is, there are many freshstarts out there who would be happy to do it for $5.15/hr. If the trash doesn't pile up, he gets a $7.00/hr. job delivering packages, etc... Raising min. wage only serves to boost inflation. The money has to come from somewhere. We all pay for it.

No it isnt. Maybe it is in some businesses, but certainly not in a business that employs a ot of minimum wage teenagers.

Why bame the minimum wage increase for the loss of jobs. That is Simply ONE avenue the owner has in order to keep his profit. He can't find cheaper suppliers of his raw materials? I'm sure there are places he coud recoup the money lost to higher wages.......but why put forth the effort when it is easier to fire the teens and blame the government.

Again as the business owner he makes that choice. He either bites the bullet and takes some o his precious time to do it, or he pays someone the minimum wage. If it was absolutely essential to his business to do a task and it was absolutely impossible to do it himself, then he pays the wage.....or else he loses money on the task not being done

Pony, the majority of costs to most large, medium even small busness's is labor costs. With health care costs going up, and the influence of cheap foreign products, the supply side of materials should have been addressed a long time ago and should be an ongoing supply chain issue. A typical cost savings today could be less than 2% depending on what the product is.

Technology is only one sector of our economy, manufacturing continues to take a hit everyday and these type of political psuedo wage increases on a whim are not part of everyones business model and many are ill-prepared to take these type of hits. My company employs over 3000 people of which maybe 5% are at that min. wage level. Do you think that when we figured our years expenses we had that worked in? The concept that big companies have bags of money laying around is just a falicy. Each business unit is responsible to the the whole. I would hate to have to justify why some fool looking to buy votes is causing me to have to lay off personal that makes the ship run more smoothly. Where do you think the largest portion of jobs are lost in this country? It's manufacturing.

Note, I started at this Company with a college degree and 4 years experience and my starting salary was, 22K in 1994. Lets just say I am doing far better now. But I earned that, it wasn't given to me for just showing up.

A good day of work should be rewarded with a good reward.If any of you believe that you can pay somebody less than a given minimum,you do not deserve honest labor given.
Remember,if you pay peanuts,you should only expect monkeys to work for you.You can always fire somebody if he does not deliver,but you should not expect anything delivered if you insult a man's self respect by paying slave wages!
Please do not give me your bleeding heart stories about hardship for your business.If your business cannot survive unless you gouge your labor,you should not be in business in the first place!
By the way ,you told us a lot about your mental capabilities by starting this thread with an insult.It really does not make for a constructive discussion.In fact,when I read the title my first thought was:"oh there is another thread by some dumb hick" .
