I have a 70 model, 55 HP chrysler outboard. Can the long prop be changed to a short prop?? and, Where would I find one?? I am thinking of putting the motor on a boat with lower transom.

I believe he is try to locate a short shaft lower unit, so he can mount this motor on a short (15"-16") transom boat.

Try ebay, or tcoutboards dot com

Yes, I am indeed looking for a short shaft lower unit, that is if Chrysler even made one to fit this motor. These seem to be getting hard to find. How can I find out whether a short shaft lower unit was made for this one?

Re: Shorten prop on Chrysler?

SHORT answer---probably not.

Depends on whether that was the one piece or two piece lower unit. If the engine has two carbs, it is the one piece lower unit and I think they were only made in long shaft.

If it was the two piece lower unit, then you need to find a short drive shaft, a short midleg and unmount the engine and remount on the short leg. MUCH MUCH easier to raise the transom 5 inches. There are some old threads (I think in boat repair and restoration) on rebuilding and raising short transoms.

For a more definite answer, go to the Chrysler Crew Chat Room tonight (thursday) at 9-11PM Eastern Standard Time.

Thanks! For the answers. Mine is the two piece lower unit which sounds like it can be shortened. However, since I usually like the easy way out I will check out raising the transom first.
