Re: shortening a pontoon boat

I'll stop whining now. My concern with living on this lake would not be the size limits of the vessels allowed on it so much as the HP ratings. I hope there are very few homes with high HP boats regardless of size there.

yes that could be true, all thing are relative, you have to remember where i am 60 miles from NYC. the larger lakes around here, especially the ones with public access, you have trouble finding a place to anchor on a busy weekend and on those lakes people do get killed for one reason or another, so thats why we got rules and limits on horsepower and boat length etc. We have about 135 50 horsepower boats registered on the lake lots more 10 horsepower fishing boats, kayaks , sailboats, paddle boats, canoes, and others.

Agreed. That's usually the case in these types of situations; HP limit rather than length limit. Really does sound like some reworking is in order.

Re: shortening a pontoon boat

each propietary member is allowed one 50 horsepower motor and as many 10 horsepower boats as you care to own and people still complain about hauling a big skier out of the water.

why all the fuss you might ask ? there is no problem till there is one.
if a boat is misrepresented to an insurance co. ( we require 250,000 liability ) in event of a large claim an investigation ensues by the insurance co to figure out if they have to pay. i don't want to pay for someone else's folly. have there been lawsuits on the lake against the lake association ( lawyers live on the lake too!) ? yes you would not believe it, a homeowner's drunk guest decides to jump in the lake dives in hits a rock gets paralyzed and the a association gets sued insurance co settles. ??
So is it safe to alter that boat ? what happens to that plate on the boat that tells you your weight and horsepower limits ? do you get a new one ? does it require evaluation by coast guard personal ( i am going to call them) ?

As to shorting the pontoon, if he/she has the money, no problem. I am sure that a competent shop could do it, but you would never see that money again, need to keep the toon for ever. I think that they need to sell or go to a larger lake, how bout the Delaware Water Gap, 32 miles southwest, but they may not have a trailer

At 135 boats with 50hp per 275 acres thats 2 acres per boat. Now I doubt that you would see all the boats out at one time. This is one of those "stuck between a rock and a hard place". The one plus is this maybe a tight community with respect for each other

Re: shortening a pontoon boat

Guess I was just wondering how specific does the nomenclature get around how a boat is measured? Is it assumed that all boats are created equal and should be measured LOA (length overall) or LWL (load water line)? If the boat has a displacement hull or a planing hull. If things such as a swim platform or ladder are bolted on, they need not be included in the LOA.

As far as cutting the pontoons, if it where me faced with this delima, I would modify the cones on the front either pinching them off tighter trimming the excess or puting a flat plate (similar to a flat bottom boat) on the front with a single continuous weld. The cones provide only a fraction of the buoyancy. Its not like you guys are ripping it up over there on speed trials.

Made me also wonder about my jetskis. They are 10' long but 255hp, it out accelerates a corvette, with only a length provision, any cabins for sale...
