My 1980 40HP merc has a rod knocking and my mechanic said it's done so I'm going tonight to look at a 1990 90HP Force with out power T/T. It's for a 16' glassply fishing boat and hopefully we can tube behind it as well. My 40 horse didn't have nearly enough power for this boat either. Any thoughts or suggestions?

run don't walk away from this motor!!! Force has lots and lots of problems and some of them have a hard time getting parts. So look for a nice JonnyRude, Merc, Yamaha, ect... and something with power tilt & trim

Well I would check it out real good before you buy. Mercury would be a better choice,Honda,Yamaha,BMW, Mercedes but for the money it could be a bargain.

I just can't say enough nice things about Force Motors..... They suck, their cheap, their unreliable, hard to get parts for, their ugly, they smell bad, and last but not least they came packaged on Bayliners, that should tell you something. :D :D

wilson,

Unless you are: a maintenance freak-read anal, a Force will give you some fits.

Also, that vintage had a small gearcase and they are hard to find good props. for.

my buddy has a 125 force and it sucks, basically a cheap merc i guess. but it overheats, has cost him alot in repairs and never seems to tune up well, always idles bad and he hates it. I'm not sure if they are all like this but if they are then stay away, my 1975 johnson 135 runs better than his 1986 force. jmo

i'd steer clear of that 40.... some of the NEWER force (by mercury) are not too bad- but not great either.

I think it was 1996 that Merc started putting their electronics, lower end, etc. on the Force. In essence, it is a Merc with the Force power head only. Props, relays, and such for Merc are the same for Force.

I have a 97 50hp that was on a used boat I bought a couple years ago and its been flawless.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info. I didn't by the Force, I found a 1983 80 HP Mariner (Merc) and it does great on my boat.
