I received so many good responses about whether I should buy a 97 Wellcraft I decided to post the other boat we're looking at also... since this is our first boat I need all the advice I can get!

We really like a 2002 Maxum 1900 SR, seller is asking $8500 and it includes a trailer.... ad reads:

19' bowrider in excellent condition. 4.3 Mercruiser w/ new gimble bearing. On trailer and ready for Spring. E-mail for pictures.

Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Desera

Sounds like it could be a fair deal to me. Good power for that size hull.

The new gimble bearing makes it sound like the drive was just serviced.Ask for receipts.
If the hull and transom are solid and it checks out in a sea trial it may be a decent deal.
Ask about when the last time the impeller and bellows were changed too..;)

Offer 7500 to start and see where that goes...

I have a 2008 bought new last august and am 100% pleased with it and it's performance. I was out the door at just under 20k including a factory rebate. If it's in good condition, been properly maintained I think you'll enjoy it. Not up on used prices but check NADA and negotiate. Good luck.

I'm so new to this, sorry for being completely lost... "sounds like the drive was just serviced" is a good thing right? It may imply that they are maintaining the boat?

Thanks,
Desera

Yes, it sounds like it was just "repaired". But replaciing a gimbal bearing on a boat that's only 8 years old? Maybe it was because it was NOT regularly serviced.

Maxum is a good boat and 5 years newer than the Wellcraft you are also looking at. The big difference is the power choice. the Big V8 in the Wellcraft will get up and go and will ultimately use more fuel. I had a 4.3 in my previous boat and it was avery strong engine. What I like most was how it was on fuel very ecconomical and had all the power I wanted, it ran in the low 50's and pulled me up on a slalom with ease. Good luck and welcome to the water.

Hi- I flipped over here from your other thread.

Are you planning a marine survey and mechanical inspection? Most surveyors will help you seatrial the boat, too. Or, do you have an experienced friend to go with you when you test it? Did you make your offer contingent on the results of those inspections?

For a new boater presumably inexperienced in boat construction, mechanical and electrical systems, I can't stress how important it is to have a pro or two watching your back. A defective boat will cause you a lot of (very expensive) heartache.

I really hope this all works out for you.

Oh, and one more word of advice. Take a boating class. Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary. Operating a boat is a big responsibility.

You never mentioned where you live or where you intend to boat, either, unless I missed it.

Re: Should I buy a 2002 Maxum 1900 SR?

We do have a friend to take with us who is a life long boat owner and he works on his own boats and he's offered to go with us. I'm hoping that's enough. Still debating the surveyour thing though...

You presume correctly - completely inexperienced in everything about the boat!

But I can say I DID take a boating class and I have my boating license, I'm in Maryland and apparently if you're born after a certain year you have to have a boating license and I just missed the mark.. which is probably for the better.

I live near the top of the Chesapeake Bay so I figure we'll mostly be boating out there and any of the many rivers that branch off. I've been warned the Delaware has many hazards floating by - even telephone poles and that we should stay out of there! We don't know where else to take a boat yet, but I'm sure there even more advice somewhere on this forum for that!

If a boat is winterized and not used for a few years does that cause problems with a boat (like it does with a car)?
