I have a buddy that needs money, and he wants to sell me his mid 70's evinrude, 50 hp, SHORT shaft motor. It is really clean and has run in the past couple of years. Of course, I havent checked the impeller or the compression yet, but I was just wondering what kind of demand there might be for a 50 hp short shaft motor. I was thinking that there arent many boats that would be rated for that kind of hp on a short shaft motor. I would strictly be buying it, turning around and selling it, I think anyway at this point. He wants $300 for it, am I getting a good deal? Is there a demand for a motor such as this or is it a thing of the past?

If you could get it cheep enough, it could be changed to a long shaft if you could find a donor motor with a long shaft.

$300 isn't a bad investment, as long as you don't have to put any money into it, to make a profit. You won't get a whole lot more than that for it when you sell it.

If you need a short shaft, you NEED a short shaft. Not many of them around. And they can't be converted without major work and parts. To my way of thinking, that makes it more valuable. As they say on TV, check with your investment adviser.

clarification: There aren't many short shaft engines around, or , there arent many boats around that need a short shaft motor? I had a 40 hp Tohatsu tiller one time, and when I went to sell it, it seemed like it got a lot of interest from guys who build those little hydroplane race boats. Do you think the same would happen with this evinrude? I just havent heard of many boats here in iowa that are rated for a 50 hp motor, and will receive a short shaft motor. I definitely dont want to convert it. Maybe I could put it in the shed and build a little hydroplane someday, I have always wanted to do that but my wife thinks I'm crazy, well she knows by now I am crazy. Around here a 30 year old 25 hp motor sells for $500, I would imagine a 50 hp would be worth more than $500?
