Re: Should I buy this boat.

Boats are very tricky. There is alot of unseen repairs and maintenance. I/O's usually more than outboards. Its always a gamble. You could have it looked over by a boat mechanic prior to purchase but as soon as you buy it its all on you. There is a saying, "the best days of a boat owners life is the day you buy it and the day you sell it !"

the price is good providing there is no rot/transom issues, and the outboard doesnt have other major issues. at the least, bring a compression tester to check for a blown jug. best would be to borrow a moisture tester to check the hull and transom.

I didn't take a look at it because i'm at work and they block CL, but i would stay clear of outboards. Personally I hate them but many love them. I think they are harder to fix, parts are more often than not more expensive, and the 2 strokes are a pain in the rear. I always had outboards, and now i'm on my first I/O and I doubt I will ever go back. To repower my boat costs about $3000 not counting the outdrive, to repower an outboard boat your looking at $10000 to start for decent power.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with the above more. If you GAVE me an I/O I wouldn't take it.

Regardless, I think that boat is definitely worth checking out. I think there's a good chance it's much newer than it says it is. I think the only Trophy's made that far back were just differently equipped Bayliner hulls.I could be wrong. Check carefully for rot. You want a solid deck and transom.

I agree with those who said it's worth a look, including the caveats about the transom and what is REALLY wrong with the motor.

Re: Should I buy this boat.

personnally i would not buy a boat i cant heard run at least on ears, the motor is potentially the most expensive/frustrating piece of the puzzle, do you have marine engine knowledge? or a buddy that does thats willin to help? shop fees are killer, call and ask how much it cost to replace a stator. the rest is what it is, an '87? boat chances are in the near future it will need some wood replaced unless a little old lady only used it on sunday to go to church and garaged it otherwise. $2500 seems high to not be able to hear it run. the trailer is another conceern in itself, i know i sound like im pissin on your parade but these are things to consider.

Definitly worth a look. i think the price is fair. A good clean up would help.

its a crap shoot! if the trailer is a channel frame with a tube tounge you can inspect it easily. wiggle the lower unit up and down to see if there is alot of transome flex. look for cracks in the gel coat around the transom some are okay due to stress. if the compression is in the 130 lb range on all cylinders its probably a good power head. the last motorized thing I bought without hearing it run needed a motor. needing a stator sounds funny, usually a power pack would have to be both in order not to atleast cough when you try to crank it. If you are really interested make the guy a deal. " tell you what i'll change the stator, hear it run then if i dont like it get him to pay for the parts and sell it for 3000 to the next guy." He knows its hard to sell something that doesn't run even harder to buy it.

Re: Should I buy this boat.

thsi guy claims that the compression on all cylinders is 125 psi, which to my understanding is good. The not running part is concerning. I spoke on the phone and I am more concerned with this thing. He bought it 2 weeks ago for that money, and he wants to sell it because his wife does not like it. I am thinking there is something wrong with it.

id pass on this one bro, in this economy and for that money you should be able to find a decent "running" boat and motor.

Re: Should I buy this boat.

I think he bought it two weeks ago for 1500 and is trying to make a buck!! There are guys on clist that do it all the time! Look around for the nice boat in the garage with a big motor on it that might of had a 130 on it! Lol yeah they buyem cheap swap motors an basically get there money back! It's all relative, if you have the money and time, you have been looking at boats in your area, you know your market, and there not getting cheaper agian til next December. Might also have tons of other issues, take a couple of buddies with you to look at it. Extra sets of eyes and points of view can't hurt! In the end it's always going to cost you money that's what a boat is...a hole in the water you pour money into! Good luck
