Should I buy this Mercury 15ml?

I am looking at a 2-stroke Merc 15ML long shaft that the seller says have "never been in the water". Never used. He says 2002-2003 model and it looks really new. He wants $1,600 for it and I see this NADA guide price (http://tinyurl.com/3poguz) but that's for a used engine that will have many hours on it.

Does anyone have advice for me? I was thinking of taking the engine to a shop for a compression test and offering $1,000-1,200.

Thanks,
Scott

Verify the model year by looking at the id tag. The year of manufacture is on it.

Those motors usually drop in value to around $1000 within a couple years, then they hold their value pretty well.

Make him an offer. $1200 is probably about right.

It all depends on how badly he needs the money.

His premium asking price is for a motor that has a factory warranty.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your advice.

I'll try for $1,000 then. The ID tag on the motor will be found where? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

Is this model outboard known for anything good or bad? I mean are they known for having problems?

Decent motors.
As long as you remember to mix the oil into the gas, and replace the water pump impeller every few years.

Id tag should be on the transom mounting bracket, starboard side.
Tag is 1" wide, about 2" tall.
