1. Should I check or replace my water pump?s impeller if I?m getting a good stream?

2. I have a 1970 ? 72, 35HP Chrysler that I purchased in 1985 and checked or replaced the impeller then.

3. I?ve averaged 1-2 hrs of trolling, fishing in TX fresh water per summer at the most (missing summers).

4. What is the highest number of years you have known an impeller to last (or rubber to work well)?

5. I?ve noticed many posts recommending impeller and fuel pump?s diaphragm replacements 3-5 yrs.

6. My question is why if I have gone this long on both w/o a problem?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and comments and excuse my honesty vs laziness. JOW

Hi, personally if the motor has been teating you well for several years/seasons it just seems to me that you should reciprocate likewise. Why take a chance on ruining a good, solid motor over a part that WILL eventually fail, perhaps while you are out enjoying life and drowning worms? Preventative maintenance is a cheap investment and will save you headaches down the road and it gives you a good feeling as you KNOW your colling system is A-OK. May want to check out the thermostat too while you're at it. One man's opinion! :)

All mechanical devices are subject to failure regardless of age. water pump impelers are one of the most comon things to go bad and cause major damage. I say, replace it!

Thanks for the comments and I know better related to age or years vs my actual hours of use. BUT!

I?ll plan to replace the impeller this week if time allows, since ?I Preach/ Practice/Teach/ Preventive Maintenance?. IOL but it?s very true. Curiosity vs ?Indicators? have gotten the best of me. My boat is stored for the winter but I have no problem with maintaining for next summer?s fishing. Help! Will a specific ?kit? vs just an impeller, include all the seals in the area that should be replaced while in the area? I have a CD that shows diagrams with direct and indirect seals in the area (driveshaft, water pump to gear housing, water line, gear shaft rod lower and water line upper). I wanted to upload the diagram but wondered if it?s legal? Do you know a site that shows seals to replace with the impeller while in the area?

Thanks.

The quick inspection of my 1970 Chrysler 35 HP water pump was a relief and quicker than asking questions. I?ll have more pics than what I?ll post, if any of you are interested, I post more. Since 1985 I had forgotten how easy it is to pull the pump?s impeller. As one post quoted, ?It Was A Piece Of Cake?. I doubt that will be the true for all from what I have read in some of the posts. It was just a matter of getting busy vs talking and asking questions that could not replace seeing, feeling and bending the impeller. Now that it?s done, I had the following observations and pics to share:

1. I feel the impeller is as good or better than a new one today would be (no cracks, soft & rigid to work).

2. I D/N drain lower unit, S/N have to pull covers at the exhaust area due to not unscrewing shift linkage.

3. I disconnected shift linkage at motor to get more room to remove a linkage cotter pin above lower unit.

4. With lower unit?s 4 bolt removed, I had about an inch + opening to remove shift linkage cotter pin.

5. Removing the shift linkage?s pin allowed the lower unit to be removed without any additional resistance.

6. No gasket vs silicone between leg and lower unit. Should there have been, does water get in the leg??

7. Since no signs of water had been in the leg, I saw no concern about driveshaft and shift linkage seals.

8. I replaced prop?s seal this summer due to an oil drip. I have not noticed any water yearly in lower unit.

9. I saw nothing to complain or worry about but I will still pull fuel pump?s diap. and head to parts Dept.

10. I tries to show how flexible w/o cracks the impeller?s blades are (it took work) in the last attachment.

Not A Bad Experience!
