Should I Considere A Different Engine

Six months ago I purchased a very clean 1987 15' Kingfisher fishing boat from a good friend for $800.00. The problem is (or maybe not) it has a 1972 Evinrude 50HP Lark Electric Shift motor. The motor is getting tired and I don't think it is feasible to pour a lot of money into this engine because if the electric shift shoots craps it would cost a mint to repair if I could find parts. Is this logical thinking?

If I do replace the motor I definitely want something used but much newer and within my budget which my wife hasn't yet determined for me. Which engine would y'all consider for a replacement in the 50-70HP range. I want a brand that is reliable. I would really like one of the newer engines in four stroke EFI, but know realistically that probably isn't in my budget.

For a little while, I ran a 1977 70hp Johnson. It wasn't enough to push my boat but I was impressed with what it did do. It lacked trim, but I'd use one of these any day. Not sure what years they were made though.

How much horsepower is your boat rated for? That is to say don't go overboard with improvements. The bigger the engine the heavier in most cases. The two stroke engines tend to be lighter so you get more bang for the buck but must take care of two stroke needs. I like the 3 cyl evinrude engines. That said they are getting old enough that the electrics need to be inspected with a careful eye. Get the owner of the engine to let you do a compression test. Look for all cylinders to be the same compression and above 90 psi. That may be lower if the engine has not been run in some time or the battery is weak. Have fun, I hope your wife has the budget for that new engine you would like!

Johnson/Evinrude 3 cylinder, Merc/Mariner, 1985 or newer.
