Should I epoxy, fiberglass, or is this a bad idea?

Hello all,

I just bought a 1995 Mariah z192 Barchetta and I am in the process of getting my rear seats re-upholstered. I found that the plywood bases of these seats could use to be replaced. I was curious what the best way would be to seal them so that I don't have to ever worry about them getting wet again. I had thought about covering them with an epoxy or possibly glassing them. Would this cause problems when it came time to upholster them? I found a guy that will completely redo the upholstery for $150 if I make the plywood bases. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Should I epoxy, fiberglass, or is this a bad idea?

You are going to get answers from people alot smarter and more experienced than I am.

My wife and I had to fabricate a full bench seat in our cuddy which abuts the engine box. We glassed 3/4 inch ply. We wanted it to be super strong, waterproof, and it also houses the 2 rear speakers and sub. We had to vinyl the box, so I did a sanding job. If you sand glass, please make sure you are adequately protected. Get a good mask, not the paper junk, eye protection, gloves, long shirt/pants, etc. Stuff is nasty if you inhale it.

Now your layout is probably different, so take it for what its worth. Personally no matter what, I would want the dern thing as water proof as possible so you don't end up redoing it again.

That is exactly where these seats are going, it is a rear bench style with three individual fold out seat bottoms, so really all i would be sealing would be the 2' X 2' plywood bottom before it gets upholstered. Thanks for the info.
