Hey guys hoping someone can tell me what to do next. Have a 78 mercruiser 260 GM 350 mallary dist. YL824AV Changed points over to electronic igintion.Runs for 20 mins then starts missing and eventally dies if i don't shut down and let it sit for a while. Tried hooking it up by red and black wire from conversion to pos. and neg. on coil with resister wire still there. Then tried running wire from 12v source straight to coil removing resister wire and using internal resister coil. Coil got real hot. then tried putting red wire from elec. igintion to 12v source wire and putting resister wire back on using coil with no internal resister. When it started to stall last time i checked volts at pos. side of coil they where jumping all over between 5 to 13 they hold steading at 10.5 with resister wire on before it acts up and starts stalling. Could i have fried the module on the conversion by not knowing how to wire it right. I have gone thru fuel system carb getting fuel when promblem starts new impeller and circ. pump temp around 150 Also new alt. and battery cables. Run best and a little longer with 12v to coil no resister wire and internal coil but coil gets hot. maybe go back to points promblem is i never ran boat with the points in changed to conversion before first outing stupid move

I believe it's 9volt to the coil.Install a inline resistor(Chrysler/Volvo) or run a coil with internal resistor.J

Re: should i go back to points

I tried running flamethrower 1.5 ohm coil without resister wire and 12v to coil. Ran great until coil got hot but was still reading 13v at coil pos. battery voltage should i be reading that at coil with a resistance coil I got the 12v source from the back of my temp. guage Should i use resistance coil with resister wire or a inline resister with mercruiser coil that has no internal resister. Can i pick up a inline resister at auto part store. Do you think it's possible the module is burnt up causing the volts to jump like that. Also should i run 12v to coil or straight to red wire on elec. conversion. Thanks for your reply Jerry I'm hoping to enjoy a day on this boat someday.I'm reaching but maybe the wife and kids will come back on someday too

Im probably going to hear it for this remark, but Mallory is CRAP!!!.
If your looking to change over from points to electronic go with Pertronix. They are the best and make a change over for almost everything. I ran one in the race car for a long time in a class where we had to have a stock dist. in an inline 6 cyl. Never gave me any problems and it comes with very detailed instructions, but its not hard to install at all. Plus they only cost about $65.00.

Re: should i go back to points

I did put pertronix electronic conversion in.. Mallory is the type of distrubtor i have. Maybe i have a problem in the dist. causing this. I'm not clear on how things work with motors and should take it to a machanic but can't afford one after what i have throwin into this boat already also a boat machanic told me to go ahead and buy it so i could pay him for the repairs it needed gimbal bearing carb.rebuild and here you want it to run real good take this conversion kit for 160.00 and just drop it in where the points go. I can't blame him i jumped into this boat not knowing anything about them but i know a little more now. I guess i just called the wrong guy that day. It's just that the darn thing does run real good until it starts missing and stalling. Get quit a bit of blow-by after running higher rpm's he said that's normal for older motors he also said the compreesion test was good that he said he did at his shop. Thanks guy's for any advise you can give

I thought with Electronic Ignition you didnt have resistors? Our Volvo has electronic ignition and no resistors.

Maybe its different depending on the type of electronic ignition you have??

Re: should i go back to points

Well if memoy serves you need to have 9 volts going to the coil all the time and 12 volts going to it while cranking the starter. constant 12 volts will as you say over heat the coil and cause it stop working properly. As for the Pertronix its still a good choice. Im not sugesting you keep throwing money at this but i have two more ideas for you,
1 call pertronix or go online to the FAQ's. Id call them. Ask if they can walk you through it.
2 see if there is someone that you know that has a GM HEI (that you can borrow for a test). They are everywhere for the small block chevy. Stuff that in, it is an all-in-one unit and it requires 12 volts to the batt plug on the cap. They are really easy beings they only take one wire to install.

Re: should i go back to points

Thanks for the replies. Yes i'm pretty sure i should'nt use resister wire with elec. conversion. But when i put 12v wire to pos. side of coil with pos. wire from pertronic conversion i get battery voltage 12.2 when on run and up to 13.5 when engine running. That's with flamethrower coil 1.5 ohm internal resisted. Maybe coil is bad when i shake it sounds like it is only 3/4 the way filled with oil i think they should be full maybe that's why the coil gets too hot. Should i be getting that voltage reading at coil. Also i'm pretty sure i left key on for more than 30 seconds before i new better so i don't know if i burnt the module and unfortunetly there is only one why to find out buy a new one right. Or put points back in but never missed with them before either 78 mercruiser i have to gap them but is'nt setting dwell the same as setting the timing Thanks again for any help
