Should I have a choke?

I have what I think is a late 80's mere 90 hp. The guy I got it from put it on the boat and then rigged up the controls. He put in a new ignition switch. The old switch was on the controls and you pushed the key to use the choke. I am sure it was a feature of the controls hooked to the original motor. My problem is not there is no choke. I can open the engine up and move the controls in the engine the seems to open all three carbs. Should there be a choke cable at the dash and how would I hook that up?

You don't have a choke as in the old butterfly type but you do have an enrichner which serves the purpose of choking the motor. It does work off the key by pushing it in. Did he install the wrong switch?

Turn the key to the RUN (not start) position and then push in on it. If you here a click, that's the enrichener/primer solenoid clicking. You don't hear that you need to determine why.

No It seems he put in a new ignition switch on the dash. The old "push to choke" switch is on the controls. The only thing I see as a primer is the bulb on the gas line.

Are you saying you can't push in on the new switch and hear a click? The enrichner is under the cowling near the carbs. A manual would help you a whole lot.

Hi,

What happens when you push the choke switch that is in the control box?
Maybe it is still wired up. Otherwise put a push button switch in the dash and hook the choke wires to it unless you want to put in a correct switch.

on some motors the click is too faint to hear... try running it and pushing in the key(s), if it works, the motor will bog down.
