Should I mount my outboard motor centre of transom or offside ?

Hello Everyone,

I want to mount a 1972 60 HP Evinrude on a 15ft fibreglass boat.
I mounted this same motor on another boat before in the centre of the transom
and it pulled to the right. Someone told me they thought this was because
the motor is supposed to be mounted just slightly off centre to allow for the
direction that the prop is turning. I did not try to adjust the direction adjustment fin
on the lower unit. Should I mount this motor off centre? If so, which side and how
much? Should I mount it exactly centre and use the direction adjustment fin on the
lower unit? Thanks again. I have used this site before and it is great!

Walter

Walterminator,On your application assuming boat is already weight ballanced I would mount on centrline.I run similar set-up 15ft whaler w/70 hp and don't have any problems with pull that trim tab won't solve.I believe most of the torque problem situations are associated with high horsepower to weight set-ups.

I would never mount off-ceneter, it's permanent!
you can always arrange inside items.
draw lines from each corner across transom to
find ceneter.
(seal the holes good afterwards)
good luck,
M.y.

Heres a thought -- center the motor on the running surface (pad, keel, V, center pod etc). There are many boats that the transom at the top may be wider on one side that the other. The runnung surface is what the hull will try to balance on at speed.

Just an idea!

If you leave centerline it will not correct prop effect as you want. I would recommend it if your body weight on one side causes the boat to list. But prop effect is since the prop is not horizontal the blade going down has greater push than the same blade going up. Hydraulic trims help eliminate this as well as trim tabs on the motor.

Do not mount the motor off center...any problems you have will be increased. Have you tried turning the tab (probably zinc) over the propeller? If your pulling to the right; turn tab clockwise when looking from top, a little at a time to test. This should help. You'll always get a little torque in the steering without hydraulic steering. Finally is the motor the correct length for the boat; cavitation plate nearly lined up with the bottom of the boat? That's the plate with the tab on it. Finally, are you BOW heavy...do you trim the boat; bow up when running? Hope this puts you in the right direction...pun intended. ;) :p

is there a little fin (kinda cute fin) in front of the prop and there is this cute screw holding it on? it is sometimes call a trim tab? you can use that to offset the direction a little! also if you mount it off center reverse is going to be like **** .!
