Re: Should I or Not?

Its the same reason you dont put a car in first gear when towing to start, it puts too much of a strain on things trying to spin the engine so fast from a start. You would snap something for sure.

I followed these cars too. Always wantet to own one !! AUDI ( Those days German NSU ) build one once, but the piston seaqls wouldnt last. When the owners met eachother they lifted a couple of fingers from the steering wheel to great eachother and signal how many times they had it rebuild !! Mazda was first to solve this problem with their patented seal system. Now that the patent expires others will follow, i think this motor will be basis for some of the motors of tomorrow.

Re: Should I or Not?

hello
I worked on Mazda rotary's back in the 70's and early 80at a mazda dealer. yep them thangs was a beast to wrench on. more stuff than a barrel of monkeys.
do they still have the oil pump that pumped oil to the carb to help lube the rotor seals? more rev control stuff on them than a bull had bones.
but we watched a guy at the atmore drag strip run a rx3 with a modified rotary. left the line at 10k and grabbed gears at 15k. was a hummin beast. if it held together and nothing broke it sounded like a souped up weedeater:)
other than the emissions and fuel consumption they were nice engines if the rotor seals held together.
remember american motors go chakka chakka chaccka
mazda rotary goes hhuuuuuummmmmmmmmm
good luck and keep us posted :)

Rodbolt: Ya, you are right about the fuel and emmision isues. Also, they will rev forever it seemslike, and pull strong all the way. Its a good thing they have a rev limiter. You can throw everything you know about piston engines out the door, (except spark and fuel) as they are a completly different breed of cat! It actually takes a bit to learn how to drive one, as they have almost no torque off the line, Hence the 10,000 RPM launch at the drag strip! Ive actually had to turn the air conditioning off to get going one time on a hill!

Then when you want to pass someone, instead of shifting down to 4th from 5th, you go all the way to 3rd! The power is between 5,000 and 7,000!

As to the oil injection, yes they still have it, but now they are fuel injected. Some people that push theres really hard run 100;1 PREMIX, and diconect the injection!

Re: Should I or Not?

My oil metering pump was blocked off. I just dumped a quart of ATF in the tank every time I filled up. Never had a problem. I noticed that with the newer ones(86 and up) They have alot more low end grunt than the 83 I had. They will rev forever that is for sure I pegged the stock tach on the old one a few times. That stupid horn keeps me on track now.
