Microsoft made a statement that any computer running windows XP would be able to run windows 10, it seems that might not be the case.

I have laptops that I have been running for over 10 years that have XP Pro on them and they are not upgradeable to windows 10.

I am fortunate, I can buy a new computer every year if I want to, but many people don't have that luxury.

That would be a heck of a statement since a lot of computers running XP can't even run windows 8.

Well, I didn't say it, Microsoft said it and I said, BS...I know better, been a part of their developers network for over 25 years now and know for a fact they lie!

My Win10 computers are new machines. I have no performance complaints; it's just a matter of Win10 having an awful interface.

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem. I kept my old Pentioum IV Dell until it got bogged down so bad it wasn't worth messing with anymore. About 2 years ago I bought a new one with Win 8.1 and I didn't really like it very much. When the Win 10 update came out I loaded it and, while it wasn't really any worse than 8.1, it really wasn't any better. It is waht it is and we've got what we got.

I'm still running Win 7 on my laptop and even though it gets slower with every update, I'm thinking I probably won't do the 10 update on it. I can still play XP Solitaire on it and manage files as I see fit. It's 6 years old and I imagine the day is coming where it will just melt into a puddle on my lap and it will be all over. Win 10 is OK for surfing the interwebs and checking Facebook but if you want to do any real work, you're pretty much FUBAR.

I know on my 8.7 machine I had to find a small program to make it operate as windows 7 does, same start menu as 7, and same control panel, close enough to make you think you are running a 7 machine, without it, this machine would probably still be sitting in the box.

Just did the 10 upgrade on my DELL XFR D630 (Intel Core two DUO with 4gb ram ) running WIN7 x64 Ultimate.

It not only upgraded without a hitch but the desktop still looks a little like WIN7.

Very little change in the desktop menu at all. The "Start" menu looks a tad different with the selectable tablet menu, but not much changed.

I have an SSD in the computer and it ran pretty fast with 7.

The boot up/shutdown and interface is noticeably faster with 10.

It's not my reg'lr computer that I use for banking and and all other forums though...... but it seems to work just fine.

Let me also add that I set up a computer for one of my wifes friends. A widow in her late 70's bought a new laptop with WIN 8 on it.

She had been using XP for several years on a desktop and wanted something new but couldn't figure out how to use 8 I set up her "8" computer with an application that made 8 "look" like 7 and she was able to use it.

She brought the laptop over again and had some questions about the 10 upgrade that was bugging her to do so I did it on her computer. I removed the after market "7-lookalike" application and just accepted the 10 (non-tablet) interface and she's having no problems making it work.

If a fairly NON-computer literate grandmother can use 10, I think anyone can.

Just make sure you look at one of the tutorials that explain what privacy settings you should or should NOT accept when asked in the upgrade. (I left just about ALL the settings to "send to MS" OFF)

Cheers,

Rick

Not sure if it will ever be required. I also think they'll keep the "Free" version free for quite a while. Seems like I read that it's free until Jul or so this year but that may change. I think they want to drag as many people to the "new" operating system as they can.

The company I work for has no plans to upgrade in the near future.... (we only just went to 7 from XP Pro a few short years ago)

I looked into it and, as many of you have said, found no compelling reason to upgrade from 8.2. I've also read that with 10 you have no choice about upgrades - can't delay or defer them.

I'll stay with what I have if only to refuse to bow, once again, to Microsoft.

We went from XP to 8.1 Not that big of a learning curve. We got another LT and it came with 10. We didn't notice that much difference than 8.1. We have no problem with 10....

Hey I'm a Linux fan too. I also have win 8.1 on the same drive and I am afraid to upgrade to 10 because IDK if it will mess up my dual boot loader. I only use MS windows when an application won't run on linux......and that is very rare. Never, never had issues with linux like I have had with MS.

Me neither! Just read that .NET is being ported to Linux! Evidently MS open-sourced it.....

I stopped doing dual boot several years ago. It's more complicated and since hard drives are so cheap, it was just far simpler to put Linux on an additional drive and swap them out............

So far the 4 computers I have upgraded to 10 are working quite flawlessly. Most people will likely want to disable the functions that are privacy issues.

I had WIN7 Ultimate on my DELL XFR D630 that I use for all my Windows required stuff. Although the upgrade seemed to take forever, multiple reboots were irritating and removing the "Crap-ware" MS included was tedious, it actually works quite well.

It is noticeably faster (boot-up, shut-down, launching applications etc) and the menus are easy to find and operate.

I know a LOT of people absolutely hated 8.x........probably because of the default tablet menus etc.

I think 10 is going to be liked at least as much as 7 was/is.
