I have a 1988 evinrude xp 150 even though the motor runs most of the parts look like there from 1988. its not the easiest to start. was thinking about buying new parts such as fuel primer solinoid, starter, starter solonoid, ignition coils, plug wires. Ive had this motor since 2009 and have never changed these parts and who knows how old they are should i change them would i see a difference. my compression is 85,85,85,95,90,85. also wanting to know what this part is, right after fuel filter on fuel line there is a tube that t's into fuel line and its mounted above starter solonoid any ideas and should i change it, it looks old. thanks for all your help.

I would troubleshoot the mtr before I'd start throwing parts at it. You may save some money. The part that the fuel line is teed into tells you if you have a fuel restriction in the fuel system. I'd also do a good decarb on the mtr.

If a hose has a crack, it's probably not performing it's function properly, replace it. If it's a static part (starter housing, primer solenoid body, etc) that doesn't look pretty, paint or recondition it. If you decide to replace these components, wait a couple of weeks until I start an online store. As my first customer....15% discount if you buy all.......

Changing parts is the most used, most expensive, most frustrating and least effective troubleshooting method known to man.

It usually introduces new troubles that weren't there before.

Where do you think the advice, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" came from?

Your compression says your engine is healthy. It ain't broke, so. . . .

Im just trying to better my engine i dont want to replace all these parts im just sayin, are you soposed to change ignition coils ever so often or just when they go bad. ive had problems getting her to start and stay idled to get it to stay running at the lake. i have to turn idle screw higher to make it stay running if i have it at regular idle it always dies, but hooked to a hose it idles perfect. ive done a carb rebuild, a decarb, fuel filter, new vro pump, thermostats, plugs and prime bulb. im sure its probably fuel related it does have a strong fuel smell i do see small amounts of fuel sitting on top of bottom carb leaking from a hose probably. im going to investagate that this weekend. my biggest problem is keeping it at a smooth idle while on lake without cranking the idle screw.. what else should i look at also when i prime the bulb i have a clear fuel filter i can see the fuel full up the filter and next morning its always empty. Any help would be appricated.

I wouldn't change coils unless they are defective or cracked. I've seen them with an internal problem that didn't show up unless under load and or at high speed. But usually if they can jump a spark gap checker 3/8 or more they should be ok. misting some water on them might show any plug wires or coils leaking spark. Darker the better so at night time while someone opens her up and another watches the coils/wires maybe mist them a little with water, will help to find leaking coils or plug wires. But its not always fool proof.

Same thing with the solenoids, starter wouldn't replace them unless problem.

Your problem sounds so much like air/fuel related!

But I looked at your post again compression in the 85-95 range that sounds a little low to me. Did you do the test with a good fully charged battery? Starter turning fast enough? Did you first pull "all" the plugs then test each cylinder and leave "all" the plugs out while testing? If you did you might have a low compression problem. They are all pretty close 85-95 is more than 10% but it should run ok just lack power or building rpm's.

fuel shouldn't leak down you must be sucking air somewhere or one of the check valves is sticking. Could be part of the problem. But for me I would keep looking at the fuel/air.

I had a similar problem with a 75hp early 80's Johnson.
Hard starting get running wouldn't want to stay running etc. Compression was real good carbs were gone through and rebuilt. Wasn't till we saw fuel leaking out of the lower carb we thought the float was seating so we took it all apart again. But it all looked good! Everything kept checking out good.
Problem was we never looked into the intake by the reeds, a mouse or chipmunk had built his nest in the lower carb area you actually had to pull the carb and look into where the reeds were with a flash light to see it. His nest foam from our seats and a few nuts to boot. When it would start these items would block of the reed and it would only run on the 2 cylinders. So look even for the weird and strange the problem may deify all troubleshooting guilds.

i didnt do the compression test my mechanic did,i do know there is a small leak somewhere and i can also hear air coming out somewhere when i prime the bulb ill look for those and see if my problem goes away. Question about my starter?? when i start my rude first couple cranks it just turns over starts for a second then shuts off then when i crank it again starter doesnt engage and you can just here the starter but after turning key a few more times it engages is it going bad or it not catching the upper teeth sometimes normal. it always starts its just a mission sometimes.

Clean and lube the starter shaft under the starter gear. A low battery will cause the problem also. When the starter is first energized, the starter gear is not moving and the shaft underneath turns threading the starter gear up to engage the flywheel. If it spins immediately with the shaft (dirt, corrosion or no lube) it won't engage.

Starter yeah you got a small problem. Weak battery corrosion on the terminals, clean the shaft lube it, clean all starter terminals, starter bendix might be weak the spring that pushes it back down, replacing the bendix its still cheaper than the whole starter and a pretty easy fix.

Well the mechanic should know how... But I worked at places that just hire a parts changer that's been working in his back yard. The shop tells you they got there top mechanic on your car, boat, whatever.... I would recheck the compression it does sound a bit low to me. But you are having some problems with the starter and maybe its not turning the motor fast enough.

right on guys i just noticed the teeth on starter are a little ate up ill order a new one. good news is i took carbs off today found 2 leaks small fuel line that goes into top of carb was unattached and line the goes into motor was leaking i cut off worn part of hose and put it all back toghter started up quick and smooth taking it to the lake today to test it out. thanks for all your help
