Should I still put an oring inthe groove on the top of the drive shaft 86 Alpha 1 ?

Since Merc has done away with the groove and o-ring on top of the drive shaft. Im wondering if I should even use one anymore . My drive is split now as I am going to replace the upper and lower drive shaft housing oil seals. I will have a new one in my reseal kit that should be here tomo [ From I boats BTW, with their low price guarantee, they did me right ! Great price ] Anyhow...Should I even use it ? It has the groove, baby ! Again 86 Alpha 1 gen 1... Thank you !

Nope, that oring is not used any longer.

i got the groove too. i havn't used that o ring in several years. no ramifications at all other than it's easier to put the halves together w/o the oring snagging on the lowest seal in the upper. i feel fine not using it for the exact reason you stated. if i get a new drive shaft. i don't get the o ring groove. so it must not be needed.

edit. just for clarification.

i assume your talking about that o ring groove. granted you don't have the pre load pin.
