Should I take my engine to the scrap yard?

I have a 1969 9.5hp Johnson motor. Let's just say my brain and hand were on two different teams as I approached the shore at the lake. Hit a rock, land and anything else that was in the way. Now the motor will not start, the propeller won't turn, I can't change the gears, and the pull cord won't budge. Everything is locked up, Where should I start? Is the lower unit ruined? Transmission gone? Should I take up bowling?

Any help would be great.

time to remove the lower unit, and see if the powerhead will turn as normal. dont take up bowling just yet, but do research demolition derby! lol

Well to start, you likely sheared your drive pin. Pull off the prop and inspect. Maybe the hub separated from the prop as well.

The main thing now is to determine why she is seized up. I would start by pulling out the plugs. Then I would likely drop the gearcase and try to now pull the motor over and see if something is seized up or broken in there.

brian write good.

think I would pull off the lower unit and see if there is any powerhead damage (turn flywheel, see if shift lever moves rod, stuff like that). Then get to the l.u. where there is probably some heavy damage (based on your decription) -- might not be subtle. Long story short, if the powerhead is OK, you should be able to pick up another lower unit or a parts motor with one you can switch out. Bowling is kind of boring, IMHO. :)

1. I try and fix it.

2. I'd start by disassembling the lower gearcase by removing the six screws on the lower gearcase to see what's up. Chances are whatever it is, it stayed within the lower unit and didn't hurt the engine.

3. Could be some damage to some of the internal gears, but unless the lower unit is cracked or something, those could be replaced.

4. Could be that whatever broke could be jamming up the selector or clutch dog.

5. I was always afraid of getting my finger stuck in the ball.... :)

It appears as if its similar in design to my 5HP Gale looking at the parts diagram. There are some picture of the lower unit gearcase in my 5HP Gale Twin thread over in the other outboard brands section if that would be helpful...

ETA: Did these go back to the shear pin or always have one? Were the 5.5HP's the only one to have the shock absorber shaft?

I'd have to agree with the consensus and say that your damage is in the lower unit and by removing it that will confirm that quite quickly.

If you have a bit of spare time, don't scrap it even if the damage is great. Part it out and sell online for 2 reasons:

1) you'll make a few dollars
2) you'll really help out somebody who is having trouble finding obsolete parts

Just another vote for for pulling the lower unit and starting there.

BOY DID I GET LUCKY!!! I was about to take the lower unit off and I found this rock wedged between a prop blade and the exhaust! Took the rock out and she fired right up! The bad news is my dog took the small black cone that attaches the prop shaft and hid it in the yard.

Very good news.

My dog did that with two lug nuts for the Admiral's car when I was putting the snow tires on last fall. Ebay was my friend.

You couldn't do that again if you tried!

haha, Good Pic, Thanks. Wedged right at the top. I might have initially missed that too! Yikes.

Glad the motor is good. You got lucky.
