Man, you are in trouble. You've already done one wrong by removing the name from the old boat, don't do the second wrong by putting the same name on the second one. Although you can add number 2 to it, and it should be safe.:)

I have to agree...you'd have been all set to leave the old name on and name the new boat the 2nd. If you are going to keep it removed make sure to destroy anything that had the name...keychains, lifejackets, etc.(have to stay on Poseidon's good side;))

Proper christening is a good idea as well for the new rig.

Just to be safe, search around this site for the "boat renaming ritual" and perform it. It involves some Champagne drinking, and some praying to the Sea-God Posiden.

Actually it kinda sounds like a typical New Year's Eve party to me.... That might be a good time to do it LOL

Re: Should I use the name

I did one worse... when I got my carver it was named the patsy ann. I hated that name and it had sunk under that name anyhow wso I removed it.... I then risked certain disaster by using the boat all summer without deciding on a new name..... I also noticed that it had had another name before which I could just make out but don't remember..... maybe that's why it sank.... I have just sold it to a friend and hopefully I have shaken any bad luck loose so he can name it and and have a bon voyage.... Maybe I should get him to will me his jeep tho

My new boat has no name and I am planning to decide on one before maiden

FWIW, my last 2 boats had names when I bought 'em.
I KEPT the names for both (because they weren't awful) and neither sunk...knock on wood :D.

If you change the name of the boat just inscribe the old name somewhere on the boat maybe scratch it into the gel coat down in the bilge somewhere. It Ok to change the lettering on the transom or wherever as long as the old name is still with the boat.

Re: Should I use the name

Old Salts would cringe if you renamed a boat/ship. But they where a very superstititous lot......yet nautical history is full of ships being renamed...especially in naval encounters.....as recently as WWII when our Coast Guard captured the German Naval Transport Externsteine off of Greenland...the Navy took her over and renamed her the USS Callo....and, as we all know....we still won the war! So if you don't whistle on board your boat for fear of chasing away the wind, or throw your hat on a bunk or keep a dead shipmates gear.....then change the name....if you do all the above don't!

I think its the opposite. Remove all traces of the old name from the boat. This is the way I have heard of.
I'm not really superstitious but I find the naming rituals a fun part of the hobby.

No, no no! All evidence of a past name must be removed from the boat. no exceptions. As already mentioned, look up the renaming ritual to keep from drowning :)
