Should I?

We just picked up a project boat. It had a 4 Stroke Honda 10hp. (less than 5 hours of run on it) We stripped the boat, serviced the engine and took it out on the lake.

It moved us, but it didnt moooove us.

So I was thinking would it be worth picking up a bigger motor.

We have a 16.5 ft Starcraft (fully open atm as we are rebuilding all of the decking) the Honda is a tiller, but we would like to go to remote steering.

So the question is: I have someone that is interested in trading a 20hp Mariner with remote and electric start. Would this be an even trade, or am I loosing out? Will the 20hp Mariner really give us the boost over the 10 hp Honda?

Thanks

Re: Should I?

The Honda is a B-100 1985 (long shaft).

With only 5 hours on it, how much do you think it's worth.

We are located in Michgan about .1 miles away from Lake Michigan. (grand haven)

We probably wont take it out on the big lake, but we have a lot of other large inland lakes we would like to fish.

You would recommend a 30 hp to push us along?

See pics of what I have.

Re: Should I?

yea, I concur on the 30hp.
I have a similar hull, crestliner 16' with a 25hp and weighs 400lbs. It pushes it nicely, but I never had it heavilly loaded.

I see '86 10hp 4-stroke long shaft up for bid. Let's see how it turns out.

Re: Should I?

We do want to put a console on this boat. (I think it would be better for the long haul, and if we get brave and tempt the big water)

Given the size and shape of the boat (see images above) would a side console work, or should we mount it dead center?

Also, we?ve taken it out on the water, and the boat is sitting up pretty high (especially the bow).
Once we get the new deck installed and put the console in, it should get down in the water a bit more (more stable) but I?m worried about the bow. Should we put weight in the front of the boat to bring it down?

Thanks

Re: Should I?

For what it's worth, mine had a side console in a previous life.

Also, you may want to consider stick steering. TD did a project with stick steer. Saves space.
