Should my boat get up on plane?

Hi guys, I have a 14' V hull with decks, seats trolling motor, etc., etc. I would estimate with 2 people and gear it weighs near 1200 lbs. I have a 15hp on the back. Should this get the boat to plane? It doesn't so I was wondering if the motor isn't pushing out all the hp or if it simply isn't enough to get it up on plane. Thanks.

Is it fibre glass, aluminum, steel, wood or what ?? What HP is the boat rated for. How accurate is your total weight estimate ??

Yes, 1200# IS alot of weight for a 15hp engine, might be enough to keep you from getting on plane and most 15's are high reving 9.9's so it doesn't have the "grunt" to get it up on plane. I know a 9.9 on my 12' aluminum foot with 3 people on board has trouble getting up on plane, and that only 900# of stuff (including the boat)

I have a Alu 12 footer with a 9.9 hp that makes it on plane with 2 passengers + light gear, and a 14 footer fibre (rated 25 hp) with a 15 hp that also makes it on plane with 2 medium/heavy passengers + gears ... I cannot see why yours would'nt ... unless your boat is much heavier.

The boat itself is 300 pounds ... but that dont count in payload calcs. Gros payload for my 14 footer is 575 pounds. Sooo 2 passengers = close to 375 pounds, motor + gas tank = 175 pounds, fishing gear & beer (lol) = 50 pounds ... that's pretty well max payload.

I found out that both boats get on plane easier and faster when the motor tilt angle ajustement is closest to the boat transom. Reason is a lot of weight is in the back (me ... lol) so having a close angle ajustement tends to rise the rear-end of the boat and make it go faster.

Hope that helps,

It's aluminum and rated for a 30 horse. The weight estimate is probably within 100 lbs one way or another. Do you think a 25 horse would get it done?

25 should get the job done. 30hp would be better though. Make certain you are trimmed and loaded for optimum performance.
