Should this hole be here? What is its function? It looks like it is low enough to take water in. The only thing going through this is the speedometer tube. Thanks in Advance.

Re: Should this hole be here?

That looks like a drain hole and yes it should be there.

EDIT!!
Now that i blew up the picture, it looks like to me that there is a cable running thru the hole. Speedo most likely, you are missing a clam shell.

Should it be open all the time? Or do I plug it when I go out?

i just saw where you said speedo run thru it.
Just get a clam shell and screw it on, and put some 5200 fast cure in the hole around the speedo cable.

LOL man did i screw this thread all up :D

Wouldn't this keep me from draining in the future?

Looks to me like drain for the splashwell. My boats both have them, one on each side. If you take water over the transom it has to get off the boat.

It's the spashwell drain that someone has run a speedometer tube through. You do not need a clamshell and do not seal it up. Leave the hole open. When you slow water will come over the stern of the boat and flood the splashwell and it has to escape.

That hole looks like a splash well hole and if so it must remain open. Any water that spashes in drains right back out. If it is not a splashwell drain and it allows water into the bilge, then yes, it must be sealed.

Re: Should this hole be here?

when I first looked at the picture I t thought it was a splash well drain, but in my experience if there is 1 there is 2, and there does not seem to be another matching hole on the on the other side. I could be wrong (if you asked my women she would say I am always wrong, but that's another story all together) but yes if it is just one drain hole, then please by all means dis regard all of my previous posts in this thread.

Time to go pour another Gin and Tonic.

Re: Should this hole be here?

Well.... what is the condition of your one hole? Meaning- is the inside surface gel coated? Is it nicely trimmed with a piece of aluminum or SS? Or is it raw plywood, like someone just drilled a hole in there? I think the "finish" of the hole would be a greater indication as to whether it belongs or not. As for a splash drain- I remember my dad's '77 tri hull had at least one hole back there, because, yes, it did take on water when you would stop. A hole there would certainly be a handy place to run a speedo cable, though!

Re: Should this hole be here?

That hole looks to be the motor well drain. The motor well is there to catch water that comes over the transom when a wave hits the boat from behind such as when quickly coming off plain. It should have either a brass or plastic liner through the hole so water doesn't get between the back of the motor well and the transom as it is draining out. The previous owner used that hole to also run the pitot tube through rather than making another hole or running over the top of the transom. No need for a clam shell over it.
