Shouldn't water go through the system?

I have a 1992 Johnson 9.9hp J10Rena that pumps water to the thermostat.
If I turn a hose loose inside the thermostat hole water comes out the pee hole.

Yet when I put the therm cover on without the thermostat, no water get to the pee hole.

The thermostat is new but I notices there should be something called an isolator in there too. Is it necessary?

I had a big problem with salt blockage but it worked last year after cleaning it up a lot.

Where's the water going then...down through the leg? With the cover on, how are you getting water through the system...running the motor?

Sounds like your pump is not working well...or overworking because of constricted passages...thus less water pressure.

I ran the motor for a few minutes with the cap off. When the block started heating up I shut it off. Then I stuck the hose in the hole and water came out the pee hole.

I took and air compressor and shot air up the pee hole too.

Tashadaddy,

I worked a wire into the two holes inside the therostat housing and it got things flowing again. Why water didn't do it I don't know.

Salt plays heck with these small motors.

One other thing... I can't tighten the starter bolt or it won't turn? Is that normal? Thanks.
