1987 Bayliner with a 5.0 shut down in the water. No loud bangs or anything just lost power and shut down. Attempted to restart it and I can hear the starter engage but nothing turns over. Batteries were at 10 volts. I'm guessing something drained the battery, but what would drain the battery? One of the starter wires was hot. I am wondering if I have a short between the two that caused it to drain the batteries. Or could I have spun a berring and it locked up? Or is the altenator shot?

Re: shut down

Thank you. I knew the battery is dead, but what is draining it and not recharging when it is running?

Your questions are impossible to answer via the interweb. Make friends with your multimeter.

Re: shut down

if it stopped running, then chances are your alternator is not putting out voltage to run things and re-charge the battery. That could be just a bad alternator, or a short someplace. I broke a belt on the water one time and it was easy to see what went wrong. Was your voltage gauge reading ok prior to the motor stopping? You should be able to take your battery to any auto parts store and have them load test it. They could do the same for the alternator if you care to remove it and take it too. I'd start with the multimeter and check flow.

Re: shut down

charge the battery, throw an amp clamp on and hit the key

if it's pulling 200+ amps and not turning.... your engine or outdrive seized.
