See 'Raise Risers' by Swansont.....I think he has a rare combo, though.....a 454 is alot of weight in the back + people.....Anyway, I have had three boats, with no exhuast modifications and have never had a problem running without flappers in any of them..... However, they are cheap and easy to install, so I would say, "Put 'em on" they can't hurt, you just need to inspect them once a year. If one breaks off and restricts the exhaust you will get a significant reduction in power and have to fish it out..... You have a Ford 302 that is not nearly as heavy as a 454, and I think that his problem is with his "static water line".....Hope this helps....JK
