Re: side bunk boards 4x4's

I got the two keel bunks (2x6's layed flat) finished up today.
The old ones were barely even touching the boat!!! They weren't doing anything at all!
Again, they used flimsy deck boards...NO idea why...they were cracked all over the place and warped beyond belief!!!

For the 2x6's I drilled 3/8" holes at the bracket locations.
From the topside, I used a 1" wood bit to drill a countersink for the bolt heads.
Installed all the hardware and wrapped them in carpet...Used nearly 1,000 staples just for the two boards. I guess they are 14' long, but still...Monel staples aren't cheap!!!

I've gotta put the boat in the water to tackle the upper bunks.
However, I did buy the 2x8's and carpet for them. Gotta bolt the 2x8's together and router the corners smooth. I think I'm gonna glue them together also...I have tons(6 tubes) of PL premium left over from stringer/transom/deck job on the little boat.

Guess I overestimated a bit. I just bought a case! lol

Anyways, heres a pic of one of the keel bunks carpeted and ready to go in.
Have a good weekend!

I used carpet glue and just enough cheap staples to hold it in place till it dried on my bunks

Re: side bunk boards 4x4's

Thanks for that tip! I was thinking of gluing the carpet down....I'll likely do that for the larger outward bunks.
If it wasn't so hot ouside I'd get out there and work...the air conditioning feels so much better!!!

I plan to have the outer bunks all made up and carpeted, ready to go, and will install at the marina when I can put the boat in the water. I thought of jacking it up and supporting it, but I wouldn't feel safe laying underneath the thing!

No pics...
However, I have the two outer bunks ready to install.
Hopefully this weekend.
I glued the carpet on them...thanks for the tip!

To my question...
How should I attach these? Considering proper length lag screws up through the frame(ibeam style) from the bottom. One every two feet or so....on the inside and outside edge of the frame. (this will put screws into both 2x8's)

That sound ok?
The original 4x4's I will remove are thru bolted in only three spots.
and where the bolts are would be right down the middle of my 2x8's, only grabbing an edge of each one.
I also have three strap brace supports for each bunk that will be reinstalled.

No prob, jack it up and block it with wood blocks between the boat and trailer frame. No way it can fall then. Yeah lags will work fine.
