Well I'm working on my 1985 90hp Johnson Originally when I would turn the key on (Before ignition) I would get a continues beep. I didn't think much of it considering it wasn't even on yet and I'm premixing oil. Once I got it started and ran for a min it shut off, but then it started smoking! So I opened the side control box up (that's where the beep and smoke was coming from). Seems to be a melted purple wire connected to the warning horn. Thought i had fixed it, so I took it for a run again today and same thing, more smoke from the warning horn. Anyone have this happen before or any ideas what to do? Possibly a short?

If you use the forum discount code FORUMS5 in the iboats store, you can save $2.50 on that can of replacement smoke and if you can find it for less, the store price matches. :joyous:

A smoking wire or electrical parts usually means 2 things;

1) You have a short. With a meter check from the wire to ground. If it reads close to 0 on the Ohms scale the wire is shorted or the buzzer is shorted. Is the wire or the buzzer smoking?

2) Over-rated or eliminated fuse. Check the wiring diagram for the motor for a fuse, but fuses protect the wiring. Not familiar with your motor, so you may or may not have a fuse.

Lastly - Moving this into the Controls section. I know it's electric smoke, but the Control section should get more eyes on your issue.

opened it back up today and originally I thought it was the wire smoking/burning but I now confirmed its the buzzer. Should I replace it? working on doing a meter test on wiring. Also still looking for the fuses.... I'm currently working in between thunderstorms so haven't had much time

Working on replacing the buzzer but cant find one to buy? Someone told me to replace it with a standard 12v piezo buzzer but most I have seen don't have the same wire connections. Maybe they go by another name but I just cant seem to find any that look similar that are for boats?

Also I'm a little weary of putting another alarm in, do to the fact that I don't want to burn up a second one if the alarm wasn't my problem. So when I'm testing the wires for a short, the brown one is the ground wire, and the purple wire is the power but what is the other purple wire?

As for checking the fuses I'm still completely lost, I found an 5'' x 3'' box at the back of the motor that has a bunch of wire that's seems to be the fuse box but at the same time doesn't look like a fuse box. These old motors are confusing lol

Finally some nice weather so I could actually get out.........

Got the meter test done and first had a readying of 12v then all of a sudden sparks started to be thrown off and dropped to 0. Now nothing electrical will work no trim or engine ignition.....
