I am getting real close to finishing my boat. I will need to replace the side padding and vinyl and such. I need to know is 1/2" plywood ok or can I use 3/8"? Also do I have to use vinyl or can I use carpet? Will it look tacky? Why are the sides padded? Do I have to pade the sides. I have seen some really nice boats and they have wood around the inside top edges. Could I use wood instead? And what type. Cheaper ther better here peoples!

Aristotle how did you do your sides they look GREAT~ if monocolored. :D

I think you could use what ever you like. Make sure the plywood is marine grade. Teak molding is nice.

Realgun,

That is a lot of work you put into that boat. It is looking solid. I suggest that you decide what seats you will have, then purchase matching vinyl and high density foam padding and try to replicate what was in the boat originally. 3/8 ply is a little thin for seating. 1/2" will work as long as there are some cross bracing on bench seats so they don't sag when stood on.

Go to the library and get a book on upholstry. Simple side panels, even in multi color vinyl is fairly easy to do. You probably already have a staple gun, get some stainless steel staples and have at it!

You can save a few bucks by running carpet up the sides of the boat where there are no bench seats. I think it would look good as long as the seats are nice and contrasting. Like white seats/blue carpet or blue seats/grey carpet or cream seats/beige carpet.

If you do use vinyl, buy the heavy weight and it will last many years.

Another thing to consider is heavy ribbed sheet vinyl for the flooring. Easy to clean, wears well, water proof and cheaper/tougher than good marine carpet. Just a bit hot on bare feet.

Just some thoughts. Good luck and don't forget to update your project photos for us.

Mark.

Actually I am going with Folding Bass Boat seats!
They are grey with red accents.
This is what I got in the grey red.
And I got 4 pedestals.
I will look into an upholstry book at the library. The web is very skimpy on the upholstry stuff.

Also the floor and sides inside will be covered with grey carpet. I meant the side bolsters? I believe. Where it covers the edge of the fiberglass and hangs down around the inside of the boat. And the little area in which you lose stuff on the sides. :D

A question you have to answer also is will you be hanging anything or screwing anything onto your side boards. I went with 1/2" because I also have my net holder and controls on my side boards. And it's been real solid. I used marine carpet and backed it 1/4 inch open cell padding to reduce molding. Also creates a nice padded look. Then used heavy duty "stainless steel" staples. It was really pretty easy. Only tip is to start with big spaces between the staples so that the material lays down evenly. Then go in-between staples until your satisfied.

You can use vinyl but it tears easier, and it s a little trickier to work with if you don't staple them down evenly. I don't think carpet will be tacky, looks very good and alot of new boats still come out with it. The backing is primarily to give it that "fluffed" look and looks better stretched over the edges. You can use wood if you are real handy with wood. My boat is high traffic and when I'm fishing I don't want to have to worry about scratching it up. If I screw up the carpet, Only have to replace the carpet. If I scratch up the wood, I'd have to replace the whole side and re-cut it and reapply the seal.

It's held up great to water and fish blood.

Ya my controller is on the side board also was going 1/2 inch there. I have a bow rider and the skirts? edges are bent or not straight!
Yes vinyl is not really the best but it can look good. I like the way you setup your boat Aristotle. Before you put in the two coolers! :)
I am going for the 4 pedestal look. I will need to do something on the side to gain some storage however.
