Siding cost

Have vinyl sided a few houses and don't remember it costing a large amount, so wondering if my brain can no longer do simple math, or has the cost gone up that much in 20 years. As an example; a box of cheap vinyl contains 200 sq ft, and cost $130 or so.

Using round numbers, house is L75xW30xH8x2 = 36000 sq ft
36000/200 = 180 boxes
180x$130 = $23,400

Has the cost gone up that much or am I doing something wrong?

Prices are about double that they were 20 years ago. I believe the current 2019 cost average is $4.5/sq ft (labor included)

Steel cost more then vinyl and I had a pole barn built about 3 years ago and the total cost was 35K with a concrete floor and door. Barn is 40x64x16x2 = 81962 sq ft and does not include the roof. Using the vinyl cost with the same figures would come to $53248

I have to be calculating incorrectly some how, or maybe the box use to have more vinyl sq ft in it :noidea:

Corrugated metal siding is actually less expensive than vinyl

That said, if I go with the higher priced wood looking siding then it comes to $6864 which is more manageable

The neighbor got talked into replacing the cedar on our old house with vinyl for maintainability. Cost her roughly $23,500. About what it cost to side the house in cedar in 1990

My BIL next store just had his house sided with Hardie board for roughly $35,000

Need to get this house done sooner than later. Not sure what I’ll do. Cedar is crazy priced now. Hardie board is an option but it be cheaper to just have the existing cedar repaired and repainted.

(75x2) + (30x2) = 210 lineal feet x 8 high = 1680 sq. ft.

Check my math. I made a fool of myself several weeks ago arguing with engineer Ted Penfield about trailer axle position calculations. Your peaks are 1/2 width x height each. Assuming you have them on the narrow ends: .5 x 8 x 30 = 120 x 2 = 240 sq. ft. (8' is a very high pitch)

I allowed a 30% area reduction for windows and doors for a recent paint coverage calculation, and came darned close. 504 sq. ft. for your house. This should easily cover your peaks and scrap.

So if my math is solid, you're looking at 9 boxes (8.4), $1170 materials. $9072 turn key if you hire Scott's contractor.

I suggest using a sketch and units in your calcs, that will let you know if you're on the right track. In your first example, you were calculating volume (cuft) - you want area (sqft). So the second calc is better, but (30ft/side x 8 ft/side)x2 side = 480 sqft (for sides of house), not 1200. Even better, I think

I looked at hardy board and others kinds and most all of them need to be painted after so many years. The house currently needs at least another paint job and I could do it in about a day. Mask everything off an spray paint it.

It has 8 inch wide words on it now and don't know why the original owner built it this way. Used staples to attach, and later I see where someone has gone back with nails to help keep them attached. Even some of the nails have pulled out from the wind. Figure I need to use some screws in the high wind areas to help keep it on.

House will look good just don't want to keep painting every 5 or so years. House is 12 years old and has never been repainted, so they did a good job. The south side is the one that is pealing so bad now.

Thought about Faux board panels, and also the imitation stone using mesh

I know where I messed up, so calculating further will be better. I just used round numbers and did not deduct for the garage door, other doors and windows. house has 4 gables, so getting close enough.

Could have done (30+75)x8x2 = 1680 so your right

...me neither. I fat fingered something. That's why I add the "Check my math" disclaimer. I just got your $7560 when I was paying attention.

My BIL markets Boral siding products. They sell beveled, wood textured siding boards. They use compacted coal ash vs. concrete, so they claim near zero moisture absorption. But it only comes in primed white.

Boral also makes nice faux stone and brick panels with a nice interlocking screw bracket installation. No 'lick and stick" mesh and mortar mastic mess.
