Sierra Gaskets...........Confusion!

Hey to All,
Im in the process of rebuilding my 2006 3.0ltr Volvo Penta engines (GLP-D, one of a pair), which had a problem with seawater in no 4 cylinder after 50hrs use!
I have had the manifold, head and riser pressure checked and all have come back fine so im leaning on the manifold to riser gasket failing.
Here in the UK its a real pain to try and obtain parts without it costing the earth and I really dont want to do this job again as ive had to replace the valve, pushrod, exhaust seat etc..
I have got all the relevant gaskets and ready to put it all back together.
My concerns relate to the manifold and riser gaskets i have, they are Sierra green type ones and i think the differ to the origional ones on the engine, I think the o.e were thin metal type with a metal spacer sandwiched between?
I have searched this forum for reference to Sierra gaskets and have found that these are rubbish?
There are reports of people fitting these gaskets and then immediately after having to fit o.e type, surely they wouldnt be able to sell them if they werent up to standard?
I would appreciate all views on this...I really dont wish to do the job again, nor do I want to replace with o.e if not necessary.

Kind Regards
Dan

Re: Sierra Gaskets...........Confusion!

While I wouldn't suggest using anything but OEM for the riser gaskets, after reading THIS thread, I wonder how many problems are caused by how the manifolds and risers are cleaned.
If you use the OEM gaskets, you may save yourself a lot of extra work, and possibly your engine if the gasket fails internally only.

Re: Sierra Gaskets...........Confusion!

Thanks for the reply guys!
This job seems to be turning into a bit of a mare and havent even started it yet!
I thought i would double check my riser gasket against the Sierra type ive purchased, im actually quite worried as it doesnt seem to be anywhere near the same material as the origional?
The o.e ones were like a real thin meatal shim with graphite type coating (teflon), where as the Sierra type just seem to be card type with no metallic make up? (part number is 18-2875). Would this have worked??
Also whilst looking on the link kindly sent by Don, am i to asume that i coat the manifold face and riser face with copper spray?? If so is it just those surfaces and not between gasket and spacer?
Thanks for any responses in advance!!

Re: Sierra Gaskets...........Confusion!

Thanks for the reply Bond-o,

I havent got the 3" spacer between the riser and manifold only a metal shim which sits between the two gaskets.
What im asking is if i coat just the manifold and riser face and nothing else, i.e the spacer and other side of gasket?

cheers
danny
