Seal kit is for a 1957 35 Lark. First, I do not own "official" seal installingtools... I use dowels and a mallet. When installing the seal under the water pump, I was unable to get it all the way seated. That is to say, the sleeve below it has about 1/16" to 1/8" travel... Is this ok? or do i need to pound on it some more. The seals provided look "different" from the originals. The seal that goes on the prop shaft for example, is open on one side (you can see the spring retainer). the original was not. I was not sure which end went first. I ended up putting the more open end in towards the prop. Was that correct? Does it matter?. Last, there were three "o" rings. One large, one small but fat, one very small. The large was for near the prop. The small fat one for the shift rod seal... Where does the smallest on go?
I assume the two small nylon washers are for the oil drain screws. Thanls for your help. Sure would like to get this motor running again.

Tom

Re: Sierra seal kit questions.

The lip & spring side of the seals go toward the oil. You installed yours backwards.

Yes they are "different". That's because the originals are no longer made. Probably too expensive.

The should be pressed in flush with the case, but sometimes it is advantageous to vary from that in order to get the lip on an unworn area of the shaft.

Some of the Phillips head pivot screws used a gasket washer under the head and some used an o-ring. I assume that's the o-ring you are asking about.

Ouch... I guess it is time to buy a new one. I would welcome any tips on methods to install them without special tools. Thanks again FR.

Is it recommended to put any lube on the new impellor?

Did you end up with any "extra" seals? Usually, you get two seals for the prop and two for the drive shaft. They get installed like this ][.

Some folks use dish soap on the impeller. I don't bother using anything because I test my motors immediately after "fixing" them.

Wayne,

The only "extra" was a very small (maybe 3/16th") o ring. I was told it may have been an alternate for the shift pivot screw. The part that make me a bit frustrated is that there was no direction with the new seals. How much "extra" would it cost Sierra to throw that in? A penny? I am not a certified Marine Engine Tech, it is just a hobby for me... But I have rebuilt a half dozen smaller motors so far and they all ran great. Just a thought. Now i am wodering how to drive this new "cheaper" design in... I have no special tool, but may need to make one. I appreciate your help on this forum more that I can say.

Tom

I might go to the hardware store with the seal, and see if there is any copper or steel pipe that closely matches the OD of the seal. Of course I'm not looking at the seal in front of me so it may be a silly idea, depending on the style of seal.

Re: Sierra seal kit questions.

I found that a craftsman 22mm socket fit beautifully. I tapped it home and all is well. My hopes are that some other folks will learn from my error and have a happier experience.

On to the next challenge... do any of you guys use flexible permatex when you assemble your gearcase? around the prop seal "o" ring?

any tips?

Yes, I use a socket to tap the seals in, too. I have used Permatex blue silicone and it worked fine, but I've recently switched to Scotch Grip 847, which is suggested by BRP. Its pricey at about $20 a tube, but it seems like great stuff.

Re: Sierra seal kit questions.

Thank you. It appears that the 3M product "hardens". I was told that it was better to use a product that remains flexible. Have you any thoughts on this?

I am going to button things up this weekend.

The 3M product is what is recommended by the manufacturer. That's one of the reasons I switched.
