Second post and I am hoping for some good advice.

I was given a outboard by someone and they knew nothing other than when they tried to pull the rope the rope broke. They are moving and did not want to bother trying to fix the outboard.

I brought it home and took the cover off and there was what looked like a fine dust everywhere. He had thought that the dust was just from being in the basement. After looking at it at home,I decided it looked like it had been ubderwater and it was actually silt everywhere. I took at the spark plugs and there was moisture in the bottom cylinder, actually both looked like they had moisture.

I filled the cylinders up with PB Blaster and letting it sit for a couple days.

So, where do I go from here?

Model #E15RCSD

Thanks!

If it was submerged and has sat for a while, the insides are probably toast. If you really wanna try though, I'd remove the powerhead and soak the entire thing in a bucket of kerosene. That's what I did with mine and it did eventually free up but yours sounds a lot worse off.

That second powerhead, looks like the better deal. Over 125 psi on each cylinder tells me that this powerhead has very low hours on it. I like the thermostat mounted on top too, it makes it SO much easier to change. If you hurry, you can get a decent deal on it.:D

Thanks for the input,

What years of powerheads will work with the 1980 15hp?

Re: Siezed 15 Evinrude

Up until 92 I do believe. There maybe some slight differences such as 74-76 didn't have a powerpack so the bypass cover needs to be changed , the newer motors had different throttle setup's but the linkage should still hookup. I put an 88 powerhead in an 83 body without issue.

Re: Siezed 15 Evinrude

Well, I did go ahead and put a small bid on that second powerhead. I didn't win it but that is ok, with Christmas and all I really did not have the money to spend.

In a couple weeks I will be in a much better place to buy a powerhead if the right deal presents itself. So if anyone sees a good deal in a couple weeks please let me know.

Thanks!

Awww man, you should not have let that one go. That was a great price. Winning bid at $110.28. You may not get that lucky again:(

That was the winning bid only because I had not bid very high. The winning bidder may have bid $200, there is no way of knowing what it would have taken to get that bidder off the high bid.

I have a question on these outboards. Is most of the difference between the 9.9 and the 15 in the carburetor?

I see a pretty good deal on a 9.9 here close to home. Looks like it needs a coil.

The early motors was just the carb, then they started adding things like leaf shims, tuned exhaust yadda yadda yadda. The 15hp revved higher hense the HP increase.

Re: Siezed 15 Evinrude

All good avice, I agree.
Years ago, I purchased oversize pistons, rings, bearings, seals and gaskets to overhaul my 1975 9.9 powerhead. This decision was made at that time because #1 cylinder was noted to have deep scoring and apparently had suffered a substancial seizure. In the mean time however, the engine ran, so I continued to use it. That was 27 years ago, and somehow there was never time to do the overhaul. Every year at seasons end, I always planned to tear it down over the winter, but never did. Anyway, a couple years ago, more seriouse plans were made and I assembled all the overhaul parts and tools to do the job over winter 2008. Thinking it would be wize to just go ahead and replace the crankshaft bearings, and rod big end bearings looked into getting them, and finding a good shop to bore the block as well. BIG surprize: OMC was no more and now BRP, and parts prices were throught the roof, and some were NLA. Boring alone was $50.00 per hole, plus shipping.

Thus I looked at used powerheads and got one off a 1975 15hp Evinrude from Rancho Marine for $125.00. This was less than the cost to have my engine bored, so I bought a can or BRP touch up paint so the block would match the engine and swapped it for my old block. This by far was the best thing to do, and far cheaper. Of course there is risk because you don't know the engines history, but I took the head off first and found it almost like new internally, so I got lucky. Checking the sellers other offerings found the remainder of the Evinrude 15: a busted up lower unit indicated this engine outboards life was cut short and scrapped, but not due to powerhead problems.
