Have you tried removing all the spark plugs and trying to turn the engine with the starter?

Thats what im trying to do lol... I have the plugs out and am just trying to turn the engine over by key. When i turn the key i get clunk... its not hydrolocked i turned the engine over a bunch by hand with no issues.... actually she sounded pretty darn smooth for 13 years on the side yard.

Re: Siezed motor? possibly?

I was looking on ebay and found starters for 60 -80 dollars. Too good to be true?

I haven't tried them myself, but several have said they have had good luck with D&B Electrical. They have a marine starter for $58.

I bought this starter at the beginning of this season. Works just fine but doesn't come with any shims so keep the ones removed from the old one. The only issue I have found is the bolts broke off in the block after several starts (might of over torqued?) and if your on the coast it doesn't seem to be galvanized materiel. I would definitely recommend! I also bought from DB Electrical, shipped super fast and well packed.

To dig a little further into your starting issues... is your "clunk" a solenoid providing the audible "click" when the key is turned but the starter is not actuating? Or is the solenoid actuating the starter and your "clunk" is from the starter hitting the fly wheel but not turning the engine over? The difference could be the starter could test fine on the bench but not providing enough to turn the engine over or there is a short, bad solenoid, or the circuit breaker not providing the voltage to the starter. I would ensure the leads and wires are in decent shape, ensure the circuit breaker is not damaged or popped, and then take the started off and wedge a screw driver in to turn the fly wheel to make sure there isn't an extreme amount of force needed to turn it over.

I bought an alternator from DB Electrical . . . Their products are largely sourced from "Arrowhead Electrical Products, Inc"

I had good results with the alternator.

Re: Siezed motor? possibly?

Well i took my starter out and bench tested it at home and found that the bendix is kicking out but the starter is just not getting the juice.... So i hooked the start strait to a battery and it killed a FULLY charged battery in less than 15 seconds... Im thinking the starter is dead shorted :) So im going to purchase one of these starters just to get this engine cranking... My goal here is to just fire the engine for 2 second 2 SECONDS. Just so that i know i have an engine to put back in the boat after i drop a couple thousand dollars restoring the pile of rot below deck haha. Thanks for all the help guys I am 90 percent sure the starter is just toast. I think the clunk i was hearing was the bendix kicking out... I should be ordering the starter next week!!!

A good, fully charged battery would not be killed in less than 15 seconds. It would melt the cables before killing the battery. What you are describing is a battery that will not hold a charge.

Replace both and it eliminates the issue being either one.

Re: Siezed motor? possibly?

If it was a good battery and died in 15 seconds the thing would be on fire. Try jumping it from a known good battery like from your car or truck.

Re: Siezed motor? possibly?

Well I am fairly sure the starter is gone cause when i took it to Autozone the benix would kick but the Start would not spin. So if i were to buy a starter would this one work? Its going on a 1988 Marlin with a 230 Horse 5.0 Mercruiser with an alpha drive. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-MERCRUI...1-/360425284042?forcev4exp=true&forceRpt=true

They sure do look similar but knowing me id order the wrong one and be out 60 bucks.

Why not have the hting re-built by an electrical repair shop? I peraonally like the attention to detail when working on my equipment and it's not a bad idea to build a relationship with a place like this especially when rebuuilding a rig never know when your gonna need them again!

I would... however the local shop closed up.... Soooo im in the process of finding another one. But i did order a starter and seeing as how cheap it is i doubt it will last. I will still probly end up getting it rebuilt.
