So i took my boat out on the lake sunday afternoon with some friends drove around for awhile to let the motor warm up. after about an hour or so we anchored down in the middle of the lake n went for a swim.while we are swimming in blows a storm so we hop back on the boat to get back to shore. The boat starts up like normal we pull up anchor and away we go until I get to full throttle when it cuts out. Then it wont start back up about an hour later it finally starts with the start up lever all the way up. it will only move with the warm up lever around half way up and at a very slow throttle. anyone know what this might be? i see alot of this on here and the popular opinion is fuel starvation? what should I check for? thanks guys ~josh

Re: sigh** more troubles

Just need a little bit of relevant information:
1. What kind of engine?
2. What year?
3. What color is the boat?
4. What horsepower? Model number of the motor would be good.
5. Describe "cuts out". Did the rpms drop off, or did it just die like if you turned off the key?
6. Did you modify the controls to make it go into gear with the idle lever up?
7. What is the status now? Will it start?
8. Will it idle?
9. Are you getting good spark on all cylinders?
10. Fresh fuel?
11. What do the spark plugs look like?

Start with a compression test and a spark test.
Set your spark tester for 1/2".
Be sure to use a known good battery fully charged for these tests.

Let us know...

I am replacing a blown ehaust cover gasket on a 1988 88 hp Johnson (J88MSLCCC). There are 21, 1/4"-20 bolts. What is the torque setting for those bolts?

Re: sigh** more troubles

so I went back up to the lake this weekend and decided it was time I just fixed the motor no more foolin around. So I looked at it checked spark and compression both seemed good so I decided it was a fuel problem so I started it and let it sit and idle for quite awhile then took her out on the lake she spat and sputtered for awhile then all of the sudden took off. That's when I realized the gas that was in the motor was very old and was now all passed through the engine and the new gas I had just put in was what it was using now. Runs awesome so much faster it was so much fun until the steering went. now it runs real well in a circle lol oh well its at a boat mechanic now so we shal see what happens
