i got a evinrude 175 HP 175gleue last summer and it runs great ,the compression is 96 to 99 ,was overpropped but changed and now almost perfect ! besides a bit hard starting cold (i used it 5 times so i am not used to it ) and didn't change plugs yet it is on a stratos 219F and does 50 MPH at 5600 with the new prop and is great out of the hole now ,. idles geat and starts great after warm-up .what tells me it needs a decarbon ? if it does ?

Remove the plugs, use a small pen light and look at the piston crowns. Lots of carbon = decarbon needed. Little to no carbon = let it be. Tell us what your "cold" starting procedure is and we can probably help you in that regard.

There is no reason for an outboard in " good condition " to be hard to start.----Are you pushing the key in while cranking it over for cold starting ??

yes i do push in the enrichment but maybe too long ! when i do not push in long enough it stalls but after one stall next time its good if i hold the throttle , maybe because of the hot foot it is hard to hold . i may remove it for next summer, now it is stored and next spring i will check for carbon after the fogging oil is burned off. what should i see ? clean shiny pistons ? or some burned residue ?

i was not clear on the starting ! it starts but stalls if i do not enrich a little after it has started, when i throttle a bit and then put it in gear then its ok .next spring after fogging oil burned i will check the pistons and put in new plugs and see if it helps. what is the good cold start procedure ?

Hold key in while cranking it over.----Push key in momentarily if motor falters until it warms a bit.

?---Start the motor.-----Let it idle.-----Check and see if it warms up.---If it is not warming up the " quick start " will keep spark advanced.---And idle will not go to normal.

another question :the impellor was probably not changed for a long time since the last owner didn't remember having it done and no record of it in all the receipts from his boat file ! is it the same job as a smaller outboard 20-40 hp jonhson ? i changed it on those two outboards without any problems and would like to do it next spring before fishing season .

agree. impeller replacement is also a DIY job on the bigger motor -- big savings too. Get a parts diagram so you know where all the bolts are. Might try another gauge and retest compression. Sounds like a good runner -- not real big on decarb unless it's clearly called for. (I've been experimenting with a fuel additive for cleaning diesel injectors -- promises to be compatible with plastic parts and adds lubrication.)

I forget where I bought my Evinrude OMC Service Manual but it was 40 something dollars. I have saved many hundreds of dollars using it, this Forum and youtube videos. :)
