Silicone or what?

My live well pump wasnt working when I bought my boat. I took it out, took it apart and dicovered a small stick had lodged in the impellor,no biggie. It works now. The hull now leaks where the pump runs through to the water with a "nut" that screws on from the outside. There wasnt any gaskets, assuming the "windows and doors" silicone i used isn't water proof. What should I use. This kinda brings me down because there has never been a drop of water come out the hull before when I would pull the plug after trailoring it home.
Thanks

ello Bill..

take your through hull out..clean well.. both fitting and hole in your hull..

use 4200 and spoogie the crap outa it ( have some rags and Mineral Spirits on hand to wipe up the the residual ...of course collect the major spooges with a putty knife first )

despose of rags carefuly as they can create a fire hazard. ( spontaniously combust ) * I allways say that when working with Min Spirits though :)

YD knows what he is talking about. Use 4200 so you can remove it at a later date if necessary. 5200 seals equally well, but it is much more difficult to remove.

Re: Silicone or what?

3M 4200 is a marine polyurethane sealant. It is good for use below the waterline. You should be able to buy it at any marine supplier. Clean the fitting and then the areas you want sealed, coat with 4200, then install it. Refer to YD's thread.

Good luck.

An industrial supplier should also sell the 5200. That is where I buy mine from.

Can you use 4200 above and below? I am resealing the rub rail and the transom.
I was going to use door and window silicone. After reading many posts, I was going to use 5200 but 4200 seems more forgiving.

My Lowes carries 5200 and 5200 fast cure. They may also carry 4200.

Bill, don't be afraid to use 5200. It is superior to 4200 for below the waterline. Nothing is forever and you probably won't remove the fitting for many years if ever. I get my 5200 at Home Depot for about 60 % of what West Marine charges.
