I have a VHF too on my 17ft center console, with a 5 foot ant,. I have also had a few comments..I bought this boat this year, it already had the ant. coax run from the console to the stern, so I picked up a in-dash radio, and hooked it up, it's excellent.<br />Now friends of mine, are looking for their handhelds to see how well they transmit.<br /><br />I have a cell phone, the battery doesnt last.<br />I live on Cape Cod and every year there is a report of a boater stuck trying to call for help on their dying cell phone

VHF radios I beleive are like a super life jacket for every body aboard your boat in a emergency. I just got one for my birthday a handheld Uniden Atlantis 250 but I only fish the pittsburgh rivers with dames about every 5 miles or so. I did not want a standard VHF radio as I did not feel the need for a long range signal with all the tug boats on the river and coast guard and river resue with in miles. I beleived the 5 watt signal will do the job.
Either way you go don't let any laughing at you setup bother you. Just remind them how much safer your are than them and move on. There has been 5 deaths this year on the rivers in pittsburgh already and 3 on the streach of water I fish from drowning and going over the dam. I bet they wish they had a VHF radio as there had been no call for help from any of them.

I guess it goes back to the comercial that you really don't want to hear in the water... "Can you hear me now?"

Your right, I shouldn't let anyone's ignorant laughs discourage me. I have a radio and I love it. On the water weather updates are wonderful.

Leaving this afternoon for a week on the water. Will be operating a VHF on my little boat as well as our houseboat. I reglued the antenna base to the boat, so we are ready to depart! d
