Simple questions on changing oil.

Hi,

My question is where I could find instructions for changing motor oil on my engine (1993 4.3LX/V6 Alpha One Thunderbolt Ignition, serial number OF0244564). The service manual (#14) does not describe this. Basic questions are: What grade oil? How much of it is needed? How to pump the old oil out?

Thank you for your feedback.

Re: Simple questions on changing oil.

Merc recommends 25w-40 oil; not commonly found, I like 30w Delo 400 myself for the climes here (Pac NW). Have 5qts on hand, and I assume you have noticed the garden hose connection on dipstick tube? Most boat dealers have drill powered pumps for sale to pump it out. 'nutcase

Re: Simple questions on changing oil.

Oil viscosity is dependent on your climate. 20-50 on the west coast in summer is good. 10-30 would be ok for a cooler climate.

Regular oil or a synthetic blend. Full synthetic is not recommended because it will not "hold" water like regular. There by making it hard to know if you have water in your oil.

you can buy an oil drain system at someplace like West Marine. Best to run your engine (on hose) to warm up so oil will be thinner and easier to drain.

If you have a ford engine I have even run till warmed up and will idle good then pull the oil sending unit, insert a barb fitting with a piece of clear vinyl tubing (hold end in bucket) start and idle (only) until the oil quits then shut it off.
