Re: sizzling coil

A short in the coil will certainly do that. I'm surprised it isn't dead already though.

Ok, what motor is it? If you have a magneto ignition motor and a battery ignition key switch, it will smoke the coil. So will a battery igniton motor and battery ignition key switch if you don't have the resistor in there. Most OMC motors have a resistance wire. Some years are moulded into the cable going up front so, if you are cobbeling up you own cable.....

Re: sizzling coil

this motor is 1971 evinrude 60 horsepwr. Seemed to have short in the terminal bar (where all those wires are connected) i saw a peculiar spark there while searching for sudden loss of spark problem. for no apparent reason the spark came back hot as ever, just to vanish again. now I'm reluctant to install my new coil , since the old one sizzles soon as I turn on the key.

Re: sizzling coil

Sounds like a problem somewhee in the wiring. Yes you need to correct it before subjecting a new coil to the same thing. There should be no power to the coil just from turning the key on. Power only comes from the amplifier, and only in extremely short pulses. In the off chance that power is getting through the amplifier (which I doubt, but who knows?), disconnect the wire from the amplifier, turn on the key and see if it still gets hot.

There should only be the two blue wires on that screw terminal. One from the amplifier and one from the coil.

I'm starting to suspect something...has somebody converted this thing to car ignition? It would be nice to know these things before pondering what your problem could be.

Re: sizzling coil

yes, I'm told this engine has been run on car ignition successfully, however when I got hold of it it had been returned to original but I suspect some improper wiring, (ya think) . For example I discovered when looking for distributor cap and rotor cracks that previous owner had been running this thing with#1 plug wire connected to coil and coil wire connected to #1 plug, bizzare? True story, the thing ran like that but horribly, tho one day near perfect except for throttlin up while in gear, revved just fine in nuetral, even with the wires crossed. Looks like next step would be a shop manual, unless someone can tell me the wiring connections, the terminal strip did not read consistent voltages from one minute to the next, (that is before) the smoking coil, any aid cherished.
